Most of these seem quite big using 3/4" x 1/4" stock, are there any smaller ones out there?

Why look for ready made, more of a niche market and therefore relatively more expensive.
Get some simple HSS square stock from someone like Ashley Iles and make your own.
Important thing is to maintain the thickness so that you have the rigidity, sometimes round stock can be an advantage, using the natural curve to give the side clearance.

Ashley Iles are often at the bigger shows with trays of HSS blank stock to select from, Yandles is not a million miles from you.

As Chas says, make your own but if you use square stock grind the left hand edge to relieve it similar to a Bedan or curved. This is the view end-on to the cutting edge.

That way you'll be able to make cuts down the left hand inside edge of your boxes but not compromise the rigidity of the tool.

I've made a few in my time out of 4" long 1/4" lathe toolbits which are very cheap and you can hold them in various ways but my favourite uses a short M16 stainless bolt drilled out with an M5 set screw to hold the toolbit in place. Axminster sell them http://www.axminster.co.uk/hss-tool-steel?sel=900362 but these are expensive ones - they're cheaper elsewhere e.g. http://www.arceurotrade.co.uk/Catalogue/Cutting-Tools/High-Speed-Steel-Toolbits

The other alternative is a round HSS bar (reground round skew) with a long bevel on the top resulting in a negative rake and a shorter bevel underneath. You can use just a straight-across ground round skew like Les Thorne too of course. These have in-built relief on the left hand edge but for bar sizes less than 3/8" it'll be too flexible for use as a box scraper IMHO unless you reduce the cutting width.

I use 1/4" round tools ground so that just the left half cuts (think quarter circle). These are great for scraping end-grain to make thin rings to decorate boxes.

Thanks for that. I may have a go at regrinding the one I have into more like the diamond side cutting scrapers I've seen.
