Just had a quote for the following 8 x 4 Birch ply per sheet :-
18mm with VAT £116.21
12mm With VAT £82.25
Thats furniture grade not builders merchant.
Makes the offcuts expensive.

hells teeth!!!

what where you guys paying before? i have never bought furniture grade birch, i use a lot of birch but mostly veneer and 1.5mm ply

My supplier is selling off what they have left for around £70 mark, that's 18mm BB/BB nice and clean usually only around 1 plug every 5 boards or so. But they have warned me that once their stock runs out they doubt they'll be able to get anymore at least this year.

That's from a ply specialist merchant, they've recommended moving onto poplar ply which they source from Italy

I just used a sheet of birch as a tool wall... once it was up, I realised I probably could have used construction grade and covered it in felt or something...

At this rate, soon the board will be worth more than the tools hanging on it.

furniture grade is B/BB, it was eye wateringly expensive before covid.

Where’s your local supplier Josh ?

Thanks Josh👍
I’ll call em. I’m thinking long run, might actually be able to use Birch timber ! …. Mostly joking as I don’t actually know the price of PAR birch …

This is a timely thread for me. I am loyal to this one panel board supplier located right on the on Essex/Suffolk border. I know and trust them and they have never let me down in our 12 year association. I gave then £17,000 worth of business last year alone: all of it oak or pine furniture board. Whatever they charge me I don’t quibble and just pass this price onto the customer. However, I just rang them about a small unit I have been asked to make out of Birch ply - which I hardly ever use - and the prices I got were £96 for 18mm BB/BB, £70 for 12mm of the same grade and 18mm B/BB is £189 and you got to add VAT to all those numbers. These are new prices as they have just restocked. Holy 5h1t. Can’t remember the last time I used this product but it must be at least a couple of years ago and this feels like it has doubled in price. I was feeling a bit annoyed with this supplier as they are usually so competitive but from reading the above this sounds like how things are going to be now.

PS. I was also told to expect the price to go up another 50% when they run out and get the next shipment.

Just had some really nice BP delivered 2 X 18mm, 2 X 12mm & 1 X 6mm for £216 + VAT. Dug the invoice out and there's no break down, but I think the 18mm was ~ £70 a sheet.

I made the birchply bookcase I mentioned above today. Not a very big piece; just one sheet of 18 for the shelves and a sheet of 12 for the back. Called in to the customer’s house at lunchtime to arrange an installation time and because I got a bit paranoid during the morning that the bookcase wouldn’t make the tight corner and low head height at the bottom of their stairs. While I was there I noticed the Ukrainian flag in their window. When I was tidying up the workshop this afternoon after finishing I noticed the first offcut I ripped off the 18mm sheet had ‘product of russia’ printed on it. Probably won’t mention this to them.

£85+ for 18mm untill there stock runs out, then £130+

I was paying £18+ for 18mm mdf this time last year, now its £31+

Apparently around 33% of birch ply imported into the UK in 2021 came from Russia.

If subject to sanctions, availability will fall and prices increase significantly. There will be those who have little choice but pay - particularly where the materials are an integral part of a product.

The rest of us will simply have to find alternatives or dig very deep.

poplar ply is a good alternative, but obviously not as dense and birch, it looks just as good though.
