Problem - my photo won't load because it exceeds the 256kb limit. Any idea how to make it smaller?

Save it as jpg. If that doesn't help use windows paint to resize and make it smaller.

If you do not have any image manipulation software like Gimpor Photoshop, there are plenty of online image resizing pages like http://picasion.com/resize-image/

The image posting help thread at the top of every forum linked by R.O.B above gives a run through of various options if you need guidance on the how's and what's of compression.
