    DMT 3 Micron Dia Sharp

All of the stones "lose their edge" after a while - at first you'll find them to be extremely aggressive, even scratchy, but they settle in after a few uses as the sharp edges of the diamonds round over. They get slower, but the edge they give will be more consistent and sharper. So I wouldn't...

    DMT 3 Micron Dia Sharp

I have a full set of the 8x3 Dia Sharps, and I have to say that the XX Fine doesn't really seem to give a properly polished edge. It sure gives a nice edge, but its not as polished as you could get from a strop. I've used water and mineral oil on mine, and have never had any issues. They're an...

Record 043 - Great plough indeed!

I adore my 43 :) Its a fantastic little plane! I mostly use it for ploughing truss rod slots in guitar necks.

    POST YOUR SS GIFTS HERE

Back in town, I finally got to open my SS parcel! Inside I found two lovely old chisels that have been rehandled in ash and lemonwood. Delightful :) Thanks Santa!

    Help identifying saw

Thanks for the guesses! It could well be a user modified saw, albeit a very well done modification. My grandfather built quite a few houses, including his own, so he may well have had a need for such a saw. He did rehandle a few of his saws so it is possible that this is not the original handle...

    Help identifying saw

I've already scoured the Disstonian but it hasn't yielded any hints yet. Here's a closeup of the medallion: Thats the plan - my grandfather was much loved and is sorely missed, and I think he would be pleased to know that his tools will be kept and used by his family. I know that I'll think...

    Help identifying saw

My grandfather was a carpenter and cabinetmaker by trade, and passed away a year ago. I've been helping my Mum identify some of the tools in his workshop and came across some real lovely tools in there, but today I found an unusual saw that I haven't been able to find any information on it. Its...

Big thumbhole ripsaw with custom sawplate & DIY handle!

Thanks for the kind words all! Go for it! I've got "pianist fingers" so my hands are long but not particularly wide. If I were to remake this handle I would probably scale down the main hole a bit - theres enough space there for a four-finger grip. Thanks a lot Pedder :) I started with the...

Big thumbhole ripsaw with custom sawplate & DIY handle!

And for fun - this is how it makes my sawtill look: Kinda dwarfs the others there. Many saws awaiting rehab.

Big thumbhole ripsaw with custom sawplate & DIY handle!

I'm a big fellow at 6'6", so I've got a long arm stroke to match, and I don't have a bandsaw so all stock prep is done by hand. For years I've kept an eye on ebay and local flea markets for a nice big ripsaw to ease the pain, but I've never had any luck. I was chatting with Pedder a few weeks...

    Ten new planes were born...

Hmm, I've got a bunch of old saws and hand drills that could do with some TLC ;)

Pekka, let me know next time you run one of these courses, I'd rather like to attend if you wouldn't mind a silly Australian speaking broken Finnish at you ;)

    My little man-cave

Sure is! She's the most inquisitive little thing, and very obedient. Sometimes she's more like a dog than a cat - her favourite game ever is Fetch, she walks on a leash, and she comes when her name is called. I can't imagine life without an ocicat :) She keeps my lap warm when I'm drafting...

    My little man-cave

My wife is a mad-keen knitter and works from home so it went something like this: "Can I have the small bedroom as a workshop, if I let you use the bigger bedroom as an office/guest room/yarn storage room? I promise never to complain about the size of your yarn stash!" ;)

    My little man-cave

After moving into our new place I managed to talk the missus into letting me have the smallest bedroom as my workshop - its a pokey little thing, 2.2m*3.5m (about 7.2' * 11.5'). I've finally finished most of my planned storage projects so have gotten the shop tidied up and things put away, so...

    German made Bailey seen

I saw one of these at a kirppis (flea market) in Lappeenranta (near the Russian border). I don't remember the maker's name. On close inspection it didn't look very good, I pondered buying it for the novelty factor but the price was a bit steep for a paperweight!

Quangsheng No. 7 coming Dec. 2011

Hmmm... I have a QS no. 6 on my rack with a Union X8 next to it... There seems to be a 7 missing between them ;)

    Waterstones or paper?

I personally didn't get along well with paper, but thats just me. These days I use DMTs exclusively, and I'm very happy with my purchase. I also have a metal lathe so the DMTs are fantastic for honing the HSS lathe tools as well.
