Please help?! Beginners lathe on a budget for bday present!

You can get some basic blanks from Tool Post or many other places. I too started about a year ago on a second hand lathe bought from pikeybay for £150. The blanks of wood are great to start with as they are generally kiln dried so you can use then straight away, and fairly close to round, so...

    Elm bowl No2.

another one here for this shape over the first. Both lovely looking bowls though, I'd be proud to make either.

    Bowl

Yup, another one to add to the, 'I hope I can make something that nice when I grow up' pile. The shape is beautiful and the finish to the wood allows it to speak for itself.

    More firewood.

Jon, that is a stunning piece. The detail is great. It remind me of the Scannia truck my dad made me when I was about 10, from a plan in Blizard's Wooden Toys book. the wood adds so much to it over a plastic or metal toy. The fact it was turned takes it to a whole new level too.

    Latest pyro`d bowl!

That is really nice bowl, and the pyro detail adds to it's aesthetics for me. Great job.

    another which lathe question??

I have been turning only for a few months, so not much further along than you. Initially I wanted to get a Jet 1442 or a record CL3 or if I found one second hand a CL4. In the end I listened to some of the wiser people in this forum and found an Axminster M900 on ebay for £150. It came with 2...

    Stair Spindles, with a twist!!

Stunning. Pretty much speechless here. I'm looking forward to the day I can turn 2 mills for salt and pepper which look almost the same as each other.....

    Accidental Bowl

Thanks for all the comments guys. From a self critique, the sanding could have been better. Luckily it doesn't show in the photo, but on the back of the rim there are a few rings. I was a little concerned about getting paper and fingers caught, but I am getting better. This is the first...

    Accidental Bowl

Thanks for the tips. The photo doesn't show it that well, but you can just make out the join in Pic 3. what I really like is that the dark areas are as they came. There is actually very little 'wood' holding the rim together. If I had used CA rather than PVA, do you think I would have...

    Accidental Bowl

I agree. It has so much more to it now that it is not whole. I really like the 'imperfections' in the wood. I think they are the character. Now, How do I guarantee that every piece of wood I turn has a natural flaw? :D

    Accidental Bowl

I had a piece of Yew I had bought to turn a piece for my old craft teacher as a retirement present. When I pulled it out, I noticed a couple of cracks and blemishes which looked a little ominous. Sure enough, as I started roughing out the shape I wanted, a big crack appeared across. The...

    Upcoming tuning

Thank you for the feedback. I will change the wood choice for one of the recommended options. I don't want it to look dirty after only a short time. I've got a nice piece of beech that is saying USE ME! everytime I walk in the garage.

Returning after a bit of Absence ! ( Ash Box )

The box looks great, I hope when my 6 month new job phase is over I can get remotely close. I would settle for where I was and build up. I know it is slightly off topic, but it is amazing how quickly turning gets into your system. I may not have turned much since the new job started at the...

    Upcoming tuning

Well, I have put myself under some pressure. My CDT teacher is retiring this year. I have been friends with his son for what seems like ever, and am godfather to his son. I agreed to make something for him, to show that actually people do take something from the classes and carry things on...

    Wood Choice

Thank you NikNak and Cornucopia, I will try to follow the guides and see where we get to. Obviously I won't be finishing it this weekend! Cornucopia, out of interest, why do you have a pet hate of lidded bowls?

    Wood Choice

"The next bit (no pics again...) is an absolute MUST i find... BEFORE taking wood from chuck... put an index mark on it..!! that way it goes back in the chuck in the same place as before. Simply put a bit of masking tape on the chuck (anywhere), then put a good pencil mark on your wood that...

    Wood Choice

Hi All, It has been a frustrating 3 months, with hardly any turning time due to work and family commitments, however the light is at the end of the old tunnel and I can get back into the garage this weekend and start turning again. It will only be piece 5, so still an absolute newbie here. I...

    Toy safe dyes

Hello, I have been asked to produce a series of rattles for a children's toy stall. Can anyone help me with choosing the correct dyes to be kiddy safe? I thought I had seen a thread about it previously, and even think someone said you can buy sample kits rather than big containers of dye but...

    Cedar advice

I am currently finishing my first larger item, a Cedar boel, approximately 9" diameter. It has been great fun doing something this size, and I really like the finish I'm getting. However, I am having to do considerably more sanding than on any of the other items I have made as the finish...

    First real learning item

Well, I thought it was going too well. I started turning a goblet... 1. Round down the blank with a roughing gouge...check then I made my 1 st mistake 2. Shape outside of goblet before hollowing. I used a spindle gouge for this but a combination my technique and having quite a square...
