    What's your favourite wood?????

My god there are sooo many A few of my favs would be Bubinga for the stunning figure and colours, all that beautiful wavey and wandering grain never fails to bring a little smile to my face, and in the same category would be Yew because of those amazing colour variations and patterns you find...

    Wenge or not

As for a replacement timber to use, what about American black walnut? Its certainly easier on the tools ect and looks stunning if you choose your boards carefully to get a good colour match If your customer is dead set on Wenge, then why not cheat a little and go with Veneered ply and...

    suitable timber for picnic table

Hi Dedee Nice bit of timber you have there, it doesnt look like it needs alot of cleaning up to me, coulnt you just get away with attacking it with a belt sander rather then running it through a planer thicknesser? As for the thickness of the timber, mine ended up at a little under 1.5inch and...

Got to agree with that, you'll start to see the joints part once its been outside for a couple of seasons, but hey the most important thing in my book is that you like it. Holly cow i made a picnic table!!

Hi Alan The main reason for all the different colour is that the timber has been treated which gives allot of the board a very pale green colour, also all the timber came from a multi storey car park demolition site, the timbers were used as the barrier that ran all the way round the outside...

Holly cow i made a picnic table!!

Sorry Andy I didnt take any picks of the underside. Dead centre on the underside of the top I put a 4" x 26" bracer screwed to the table from the underside, Either side of that I put and angled brace going from one side of the centre brace too the centre of the seat support strut. I am...

Holly cow i made a picnic table!!

Hi Alan I'd recommend at least 2 coats on all pieces, and three on the top and seats and it really does give a good looking finish, how long it lasts is an unknown at this point, I'll have to wait till next year and see how it looks. Perfectly ok to use it on pine as thats what mine is made out...

    Rip off charges

i've been considering importing for resale small'ish quantities of highly figured hardwoods, specifically Maple, Bubinga and Padauk as i've found these to be very hard to come by in the good old UK These timbers interest me the most because of the quite frankly mind blowing grain patterns i've...

    Rip off charges

i've been thinking of Importing timber from the US, if you don't mind me asking what timber did you buy, and what charges did you incur? I'm considering importing some very lovely Figured timber from various saw mills all over the US, and am just investigating all the charges myself...

Holly cow i made a picnic table!!

My sister wanted a clear finish so i used Liberon Garden furniture oil, 2 coats with a light sanding with 240grit in between coats. It does really bring out the different colours in the timber. Thanks for the kind remarks after a couple of years butchering wood, it looks like all the advice i'v...
