Hi guys, I did my leg in last week & borrowed a friends walking stick for a short while. She asked me if I could find out what the wood was, as the stick belonged to her Grandfather who was a Merchant Navy Captain - I've seen the wood before & I have a pen blank of the same, but I don't know...

PS: The strange lip on the stem, was an attempt to protect your hand from the heat of the hot water they add to the herb mixture. By the way the drink has some effect, it's like super strong coffee with added guarana!! :shock: :shock: I hope the wood can take the prolonged use of the warm...

It was green (as always), I turned it to the finished shape, stuffed it with kitchen roll & sat it in the coolest place in the house for a few days. I then pretty much saturated it with the food safe oil & left it for another few days. No splitting, but it has taken a hint of discolouration in...

Well it's been Feria season here, so too much partying & not enough turning. I made this for my Uruguayan friend from Orange wood, finished with food safe oil. They fill it with herbs & top up with hot water & then drink it through a special straw type thingy. I came up with the design myself...

The wood was actually very nice to turn, had a nice fruity smell & the shavings were nice & clean. It was pretty dry from lying about under the sun all day over here, for god knows how long. I'm just glad that I managed to salvage it at all, most of it was pretty burnt!! But it turned out...

PS Has anyone ever seen Spalted Fig before, these may well be unique??

Well I've managed to salvage a presentable piece of the spalted fig from the bonfire, it should be big enough for another candlestick (I hope & pray). I've reduced it to a cylinder & made up my marking stick. All that is needed now is the nerve to go & attempt my 1st effort at copy turning...

the colour & grain pattern on the yew natural edge bowl is absolutely fantastic, so warm & cosy.

hopefully I can make the 2nd one tommorrow & post it. I'm quite happy with my progress & glad to have my spindle gouges working again. Figs aren't in season yet Dick, but they go great with serrano & a glass of fino when they are!! 8) 8)
