    Workshop Tidying rant

Good shout. I might just put them on Gumtree - I've seen a few boxes on there for £5-£20. If I can get a few quid in my pocket for things I don't use, always a bonus! Because I packed everything in boxes, I'm now having to shuffle through everything to make anything... But so far it's been...

    Workshop Tidying rant

When on earth did I get so much random stuff! Spent the last 2 days just trying to make sense of stuff before I can functionally organise it - Put up some french cleats, then bought some storage boxes. 1 box - power tools Imma make a cleat for, another for 'project parts' stuff that I bought...

French Cleat question - biscuit spacers?

I went ahead without the biscuits. Sacrificing strength for a small amount of convenience seems a bit pointless. I've seen tips like Chai Lattes though, apparently thats the current go- to anyway

    Table saw recommendations

Sorry for the delay is coming back - Thanks for the tips, however, while I was hunting, I found a Dewalt 743N - the type that flips over into a mitre saw on Gumtree for £90. I'll need to build an outfeed table, and extensions to the side, but with a little thinking (And googling for ideas)...

    Router advice please....

someone correct me if I'm wrong, but If i remember rightly Bosch routers have a unique baseplate, so if you need to get bushings or anything during your woodworking journey, you'll likely have to get an adaptor too. Might be the same for other 'universal' jigs aswell. That being said, It'll...

French Cleat question - biscuit spacers?

I saw on a youtube video a chap that was installing french cleats. One of the additions he made, was putting biscuits on the back of the cleat, and when screwing them to the wall (Or in my case, board attached to the wall) go through the cleat and the biscuit. The idea was to pull them away...

    Table saw recommendations

Was in the workshop today and my table saw started making a funny smell - Was an electricy type smell - You know the type. I feel like it's going to give up the ghost soon, so wanted to get ahead of it and start browsing. Budget is about £200-£300 (Maybe a bit more), And I use it mainly on...

Cheap Mini/Micro lathe - What does this part do?

Thanks Chai, Thats something to think about and try out. I've looked all over, and can only find the description I mentioned, and all the photos on the various sites are pretty much exactly the same. even 'unboxing' videos hold no clues though, most of those folk also don't know. It's not...

Cheap Mini/Micro lathe - What does this part do?

I bought a mini-lathe from amazon - although more accurately it should be a micro lathe - Only really for sanding/polishing wooden rings. Means I can do it in the house as opposed to heading down to the garage where I'll get distracted with all the other projects. Anyhow, it's been working...

    Box or Dovetail joint quantity

So far, I've been butt-jointing any box-like things I make - but I wanna try some more fancy joints. I've seen many guides on making a router table or tablesaw jig but I have questions... What I've struggled to find, is how to decide how fat to make the fingers. Sizing them as 1/2 the...

    Charnwood W815 belt tension

Thanks Alex. As with most newbies, I was/am a little... impatient and kinda wanted to be getting things made, hence the carbides. I got the Tormek jigs, and they are a dream come true. I spent half of saturday just sharpening/honing. Turns out there was only 1 bowl gouge in the job lot of...

    Wood ID!

From this thread, and a bit more scouring on the shops site, This is what I reckon: 1 - Sapele 2 - Zebrano 3 - Purple Heart 4 - Walnut 5 - Paduk 6 - Wenge or Black Palm 7 - Iroko 8 - African Blackwood 9 - possibly Knob Thorn (Yes, I made a juvenile giggle at the last one)

    Charnwood W815 belt tension

A little update, I turned a couple of pens no trouble at all, and I loaded a new bowl blank on there today - This time Sycamore - on the hardness scale is a little softer than the Ash I was using before. I got waaaay less stoppages, so that's a bonus. I did find I had to be fairly gentle, as...

    Wood ID!

Given the context, thats likely right as they usually have a fair bit of Paduk in the store

    Wood ID!

Iriko is probably right as they did have a load of it in the shop

    Wood ID!

I think you're onto something Linus, Looks very like it, although it came up as 'Black Palm' when I googled it - I guess it's another name for it

    Wood ID!

Ahh, 8 was in a box of random pen-making stuff I got on gumtree. Didn't realise Ebony could have a lighter part of it.
