Working Spindle spacings for staircase?

Horizontal distance between the inside faces of the posts plus the thickness of a spindle is the measurement you want. Go for whatever centre's you want as long as the gap between sticks is less then 100mm...90mm is pretty good. Whatever you work out, remember you'll have one space more then...

    Stairs: Need to build some

Mark the holes out either side Ed & then drill in from each side if you've not got a pillar drill, you've half the chance of drilling on the p!ss that way. Me,I normally went 25mm to the centre of the hole, depends on how long your tenon is though, too close to the end & it'll break out.

    Stairs: Need to build some

Tell you what Ed,you've done a blinding job on those stairs, you've cleaned them up a treat mate, they look good. As for scotia's,well this'll answer crazey's post as well, generally speaking you'll find them on cut-string stairs only, the main reason for this is to cover breakout at the top of the...

    CHOP SAW WORRIES

Laser guides do come in very handy sometimes, maybe not on chop-saws,& maybe not on home woodworking machines but to dismiss them as a gimmick is wrong. This machine is a wadkin PU straight line edger, possibly the best rip saw ever devised, underneath that housing is a sawblade that'll eat...

staircase - winder vs quarter landing

This any good Roger,or does it need any fine tuning ? The dims for the winders are only approximate, they're as close as I can get with a 1:10 squiggle, needs setting out full size on an mdf board or something similar.

staircase - winder vs quarter landing

Good enough Roger, put them up here or pm them to us,tight measurements or working measurements & we'll get it sorted out mate.

staircase - winder vs quarter landing

No,you can actually build a stairs with winders without a post if you like,we use to call them "shark fin" stairs due to the shape of the strings which takes the place of the post. What I need is the plan of the stairs including the measurements of where it finishes & where it's likely to...

staircase - winder vs quarter landing

Generally you'd want 12 risers on that one, ideally you'd want to keep the rise under 200mm. However,as you've said, lets keep with the setting out so far.A good rule of thumb method is the rise plus 10% plus a bit to keep within the 42 degrees.(where's the degrees button on the puter...?) A...

staircase - winder vs quarter landing

Not for setting out,no,not if that's what you're after. Naturally you can google practical stairbuilding books or better still, have a look through www.abebooks.com . Keep the website to yourself though 8)

staircase - winder vs quarter landing

...A winder corner does require more space than a quarter landing in order to comply with Building regulations... It's only the setting out of the winder box that can be slightly larger then the setting out of the 1/4 landing(note the word "can"this isn't always the case through,it can be the...
