planer thicknesser or power tool planer

My hubby bought a planer/thicknesser last year. It's the best piece of kit he has. I can now cadge any old bits of wood and thickness them to exactly what I want. Dunno why he hasn't had one before. Go for it! Sue

standing up or sitting down ?

Hi I gotta sit - and at the right angle. When I stand, I seem to move around and find it difficult to cut smoothly. I use a tall draughtsman's chair and my saw is mounted on the bench with everything I need within reach. I have been scrolling in this manner for over 10 years, now. Sue

    Shameless bragging - first sale

I shall have to ensure that my other half doesn't see your saw. We will have get all that old metal stuff out of the loft!!! Seriously, though, I love your jigsaw, it is so evocative of childhood.I remember sitting round the table when I was a child doing the things "en famille", I have sat...

    Dewalt DW788 Scroll Saw

I was gonna buy a DeWalt, and went along to the National Woodworking Exhibition a few years ago, complete with the dosh. The man at the DeWalt stall was the one who advised me to buy the Hegner!!! The difference in the cost at the time, didn't seem to be way out and I am ever so glad he...

    scroll saw v band saw

for work like this, I would not try anything but a scroll saw. You cannot get anything like the accuracy or fine workings on the bandsaw. Yes, they do go more quickly, I agree, but for lettering and fancy stuff, the extra work you have to do afterwards has surely nullified any time gained int...

    "Top loading" scrollsaws

There seems to pros and cons to both, I think the top loaders replace the blade by "feel", whereas we bottom feeders thread the blade by "feel. Both would appear to have a learning curve and a time required to develop the "knack" Sue

    Oak bees wax finish

Hi We keep bees (or did until recently and will again), so use lots of beeswax. As a finish, however, it tends to be very soft, too much so for tables etc. We mix it with carnuba wax which is very hard. It comes in flakes, We melt them together in a pan and then rub it on. Works fine and the...

    Show

I was really disappointed Lots missing : Axminster, Liberon, Poolwood, no second-hand tool stalls (lots of cheap far-eastern rubbish, though). Last time we went there were plans and patterns, lots of glues, stains etc, and great show offers. Stallholders were starting to pack up at 3:30 on...

    Ally Pally tomorrow (Saturday)

I'll be there, jumping up and down with excitement! Last time was about five years ago. Bought my Hegner scroll saw, a dust extractor, a router table, some wood, books and lots of other odds and ends. Driving down from Norfolk, a reasonably easy run if I remember rightly. I'll be looking at...

    Computer aided design software?

If you draw your patterns by hand and that works for you, why not just scan your patterns and save them to your computer. A scanner is probably cheaper than many of the dedicated art packages. For portraits and fretwork stuff and altering pics and existing patterns, I use Paint Shop Pr (Corel)...

    Fox 22-564 planer-thicknesser

Hi Is anyone in a position to give me a review on the above. I desperately need a planer thicknesser, but am a little strapped for cash. I'm looking to use hardwoods (ash, teak, oak), accuracy is of prime importance. Main uses of wood - small stuff for scrollsawing and larger for boat...

    Thoughts Of Germany (Slightly Off-Topic)

Our eldest son, lives in Munich, wo we often "do" the Christmas markets. This is the first year in a long time that we haven't been to one. Last year we went to Salzburg, the year before to Nuremberg (wooden toy heaven). We have also bought quite a few bits and pieces in Lidl and Aldi over here...
