Any members on here from NZ? Looks like it's going to be our next move, so I could do with picking some Kiwi/emigrant brains... 8)

    Art (again)

...or is it art? Might be too useful! The artist has an appropriate name though. http://mocoloco.com/archives/001385.php Something for the Xmas list maybe?

    Ray Mears - Bushcraft

I just watched all of Ray Mear's Bushcraft programs, and was pretty impressed by the woodworking on display. Any one else follow this show? The guy in Sweden making wooden skis was very impressive, as was Ray himself making a canoe paddle using little more than an axe and a pocket knife, and Ray...

    Paint/finishes on baby toys

I've bought a couple of Naef wooden toys recently for my baby son. They're really nicely designed and beautifully made. Naturally, they use non-toxic colouring as a finish, when not bare wood. I read that the finish uses similar ingredients to that used in cosmetics. I love the vivid colours...

60th birthday ideas for my guru

It's my Dad's 60th in a few weeks, and I'm a bit stumped as to what to get him. He got me interested in the engineering game, DIY and the rest, and I want to find him something a bit special - ideally something new, given that I'm too far from home to go browsing flea markets. He's something of...

It's December now (here at least), so I can ask this now - what are you getting for Xmas? Binoculars for me, a new micrometer, and off the leash to eat as much British Xmas nosh as possible. :D

    Very small planes

So, given that I'm going to be building some very small furniture, what's the panel's opinion on very small planes? Worthwhile, or just a gimmick? These are what I have in mind: http://www.axminster.co.uk/default.asp?part=111068 (I wasn't thinking and almost wrote "Tiny Tools" as the subject...

    Tiny wee woodworking

Given the space constraints of my playroom (1.6m x 1.4m), I'm forced to operate at a much smaller scale than probably most other folks do. For a while I've been making variations on the theme of "box", mostly from 5mm thick material. Anyway, my 'ickle dovetails and finger joints are looking OK...

Richard Kell - anyone know a website? UK supplier?

In my quest for yet more ways to empty my wallet, the name of Richard Kell Toolmakers has come up. Here are some examples of his (their?) work. So, I know the company is based in Northumberland, but can't find a website. Anyone know of a supplier in the UK? Is there a website? Some very nice...

New tool - just whinging, or do I have a point?

I just got a Joseph Marples Trial 1 marking gauge and try square. Like a lot of people, when I choose to buy a tool new instead of secondhand, I'm thinking of decades of use and then maybe of the next generation doing the same, and this range is supposed to be the best that Marples make. I...
