    Truss Joints

Don't use steel tapered pins you will just blow out the relish on the tenon. Oak pegs are used for a reason they bend, instead of blowing out the tenon. Stainless pins would work if you are using dried wood, you could clamp the joint to its final position and then bore both pieces of the joint...

Osmo Top Oil and Silicone Sealant

Just an update on the topic, the silicone sealant sticks well and I have sealed against the wall and the basin is bedded onto the oak worktop using the silicone too. In all these situations the grip / stick is fine and this is on top of 3 coats of top oil

Osmo Top Oil for Chopping boards???

I used liquid paraffin on mine. Go to the chemists and ask for Liquid Paraffin BP, it is medical grade, great for cutting boards and cheap. I gave mine several coats and then finished with a mixture of Liquid Paraffin and Real Beeswax (just warm the two gently together). You may get some funny...

Osmo Top Oil and Silicone Sealant

I have built a two-piece oak surface to let a semi-countertop basin into, the other piece forms the top to the cabinet enclosing the concealed cistern. So I wanted to finish the complex oak surface first and the seal it to the tiles wall it sits against, I will finish it again once it is...

Osmo Top Oil and Silicone Sealant

To answer my own question and for the record ..... I used a test piece of oak sanded (240 grit) and finished half of the piece with two coats of Osmo Top Oil applied with a cloth. I ran several strips of silicone sealant across the finished area and some across the finished unfinished area...

    Screws for oak, outside

I concur with that, lots of outside work with oak and stainless fixings. They can be a bit brittle, however the only time I have had a problem is when the pilot hole is too small. No problem with Screwfix stainless screws coupled with the right sized pilot hole. When driving long screws into...

Osmo Top Oil and Silicone Sealant

I am just finishing a bathroom refit and I am finishing the oak work surface with Osmo Top Oil. Firstly what a lovely product, easy to use, low odour and a nice sheen when dried. My question is, how well does silicone sealant stick to the surface once I have finished the requisite 3/4 coats...

    Wadkin Planers / Thicknessers

I rebuilt an old BAOS a while back, the thread is here https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/wadkin-planers-thicknessers-t15315.html?hilit=baos. I used a multi link v-belt which saves any problems with set, if the machine is not used regularly. Replacement of the bearings is an interesting...

    Reciprocating saw for tree pruning?

I would second the Silky saw recommendation, they cut very quickly and are good in close quarters, I do most of my pruning around the garden with one of these. Clearly if it is bigger you may need a bush saw, but for most pruning it will be more than adequate Try something like this...

    Startrite Mercury Pillar Drill

Steve you may be able to find a handbook for it .... if they are anything like the books I found for my Startrite bandsaw and Wadkin planers they are more user manual than technical / workshop manual. My best advice would be to take lots of digital pictures at each stage or dismantling, without...

    External Door frame

When we installed my brothers front door a few years back we shimmed and spaced the door frame into place and then used expanding foam across the whole width of the frame all around. The intention was to then use frame anchors once the foam had set. However we found that the foam set so well...

    Modifications to a Startrite bandsaw

I run my Startrite bandsaw on an inverter too. Do you have to kick start yours or does the inverter manage? The problem being the the sheer mass of the wheels / rotating mass is too great for the inverter, so I just have to help it away from standstill by rotating the pulley a little at...

    Truss Joints

Dibs your tenons look short, in addition to minimum distance from shoulders you need to ensure that there is enough oak beyond the oak peg to withstand "withdrawal forces". The amount of oak beyond the peg in the tenon (referred to as the relish....not quite sure why) is the limiting factor of...

    Chopping board finishes??

I made 5 hard maple and purpleheart (wood whisperer style) chopping boards for Christmas. After lots of research. I finished them with Liquid Paraffin BP available from a chemist Liquid paraffin and mineral oil are the same beast and do form the basis for baby oil. I paid about £1 for...

Credit crunch downsizing? Home Sweet Home!

Steve when you make the grill, make sure you use a fine mesh. I made a guinea pig cage a while ago for my son. One morning I found a rat in the cage stealing the guinea pigs' food. Needless to say I had to go down a couple of sizes from what I thought would be rat proof.

    Oak plank thickness?

Mike I built this table and benches a couple of summers ago. All in oak, the top slabs and bench tops are 12" wide and 3" thick. The legs are 8" square and the stabilisers and links are all 3" x 4". I mortice and tenoned all around and then draw bored all the joints using dry oak pegs. I used...
