What to do with a split?

Hey guys, brilliant! Love the idea of incorporating it into the finished item as a feature, saves a lot of wasted effort as well! I'll get it planed down thickness wise and then decide. The wedge/leg idea is a real possibility! I'll let you know what happens!

What to do with a split?

Hoping to make a small table from an Oak slice. It has now dried but has also, as expected, split. What can I do with this split, to hide it or incorporate it into the table please? fallout 3 morality

Wooden Folding Art Print Rack Storage Display Stand

Thanks Ed, thought that may well be the case. I like the reverse engineering idea, will give it a go on paper and see what I come up with. Not exactly a draughtsman but fairly handy with pencil and rule!

    Drying an Oak slice

Um, not sure how I'd cut it in half, only got a hand saw and the joint would always be vissible me thinks? Also, should I leave the bark on during drying, or take it off?

    Drying an Oak slice

Just planed off the chainsaw cut marks and ordered some of this "end sealer"! https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B007HM1D5U/ref=pe_3187911_185740111_TE_item

    Drying an Oak slice

Many thanks gentlemen, all most helpful. Don't have any wax other than furniture polish but could get some of the Anchorseal I think? Size wise, just 35cm X 65cm long so not too big. I could indeed put a cut to the centre but have to be to each one I guess.

    Drying an Oak slice

Um, food for thought there PhilP! The man cutting the tree up said something about diluting PVA and painting both sides?

    Drying an Oak slice

In the last gales a large Oak came down and is now being dismantled. I have been given a lovely "slice" to make a small coffee table from but how can I dry and seal it to prevent it from cracking please??

    Home made steady.

I prefer to set the piece up between chuck and tail centre (with the steady between the two) then move the steady to the end and snug the rollers up to the workpiece. Then remove the tailstock from the bed and mount the tool support.

    Home made steady.

I'd like to make a frame from aluminium plate one day but as I will rarely use it, at the moment, that can wait. I also have no way of cutting out the centre circle other than my scroll saw and it's not too happy with thickish metal!!

    Home made steady.

That's what I do  If I was going to turn a rod longer than the lathe base then I'd set up the steady with a shorter length between centres and then only lift the top steady arm to remove the piece. I can then put the longer piece in, resting on the two lower rollers and then bring the...

    Home made steady.

Yep, just finished mounting it onto the plate and attached it to the lathe. Must say, kinda chuffed, gives me a whole new scope and runs very sweetly :D
