What large capacity bandsaw is best for a small workshop?

Thanks for all your posts guys! There's lots to consider here. I'm not in a rush to buy a new saw because I want to get it right, I've not thought too much about blade quality or the whole single vs 3 phase thing. Saying I'm using a fully stable board and excluding the fact that the grain...

What large capacity bandsaw is best for a small workshop?

My old Dewalt bandsaw is now not up to the job. I need at least 300mm cut vertically and I need it to be super accurate. I'm hoping to be able to cut 3mm and 6mm deep x 300mm high x 600mm long without having to then put it through a planer to get to any form of uniform throughout the cut. I'm...

    Stabilising spalted wood

I have tried so many things to stabilise almost rotten wood and haven't found a cost effective solution as yet. I will try phoning easy composites and see what they recommend. I'm really interested in what everyone else uses to stabilise large blanks ?

    Stabilising spalted wood

Hi everyone, I've not been on for a while because I've been busy processing timber for future projects and also building a vacuum stabilising system. The system works great but ...... I've tried using lots of different things to stabilise VERY punky spalted almost rotten wood but nothing really...

    Is 1hp enough?

Thanks guys, There is a lot to think about here with all your comments ! You've all given me very helpful comments. I will checkout the axi lathe as well. To add to all this confusion ..... the nova galaxi 1624-44 with a digital motor ! I would have loved a second hand lathe but they don't...

    Is 1hp enough?

I've been rattling on about getting a new lathe for a while now. I'm down to the finalists which is a relief !!! It's taken sooooo long because to me it's a huge decision that has to be right. The record power maxi 1, the stratos FU230 and the Killinger KM1400 are the finalists. Ideally I...

Record power Maxi 1 or killinger km1400

I will do. I'll send Simon a message and see what he says. The lathes he sells look lovely ! I would love to say with a stratos lathe my turning would go to another level but....... well.... not sure it will?!

    African Black Walnut

I wouldn't turn it! Best thing to do is send it to me (hammer) Black walnut should be nice to work with although I've always found it has a good chance of cracking when it finally drys and gets to the rooms average humidity.

Which hollowing tool do you recommend

I use the Simon hope hollowing system with mounted arm. It is fantastic. I'm now a big fan of the Simon hope tools. Other then that I mainly use crown cryogenic tools, so I would say both are good but I'm on the hope side for hollowing tools. Hope this helps a little ? :D

What would you do with this?

I work with a lot of stuff like that, I love it! It's a bit for me wether it turns out to be a nice piece or throw a away thing, all depending on how soft it is around the spalting. I'd have a go at the burr first though. Looks fun

Record power Maxi 1 or killinger km1400

I'm having to buy a new lathe. My trusty old axi AWVSL900 has problems with its bearings and isn't powerful enough for my needs. I'm looking at the maxi 1 or killinger km 1400. I did like the stratos lathes sold by Simon hope but it's out of my price range! So which one guys ? I just can't...

    Powered Respirators

I use a record power air cleaner and a trend air shield. The air shield is great but I would say after a few hours of turning the weight does make my neck ache. Wouldn't be without a powered respirator now and it had wood chips hit the screen too.

    Black Friday Deals

£8 discount !?!?! Thats rubbish for a Black Friday deal. I've had a look for some Black Friday deals on lathes but nothing !! Wouldn't it be nice if Robust did a 70% discount for Black Friday. :D

Which chuck would you recommend for a Record DML 305?

I use a record power sc4 chuck.I think it is brill! No negative points at the moment. It is heavy and would do large bowl turning projects.

    Rutlands sanding set

I use the abrasive mesh too. I also use A Mirka sander also with mesh style pads. I would never go back! The finish is much better, it lasts longer and extraction is better. I don't see any negative point about using mesh abrasive.

    Poolwood lathes

I've posted many times about my quest for a new lathe. I've seen there is a poolwood 28 40 up for sale near me. I've heard they are good but how good ? It looks well made and has enough grunt to turn large platters. If it will fit in my little turning workshop is it worth going for? Any advice...

    Looking for a new lathe

I'm in the same position. I've been looking at the new record power cornet, it looks very good. Also I've been talking to Simon hope and he's got a new lathe that will be available in the new year and apparently it's very good. Also I've looked at the graduate Union lathes. It's a very hard...

    Motor upgrade

I've been looking at upgrading my Axminster AWVSL900 lathe to something with more power but I'm happy with the lathe in general. It's always bolted down so I have no problem with it jumping around, I just need more grunt. I was thinking maybe upgrading the motor to a 1 1/2 hp newton tesla 3...
