    Dust extractor fittings above 4"

I’m just starting to think ahead about a ducting system in a yet to be finished workshop. Question is: is a metal piped system favoured over a plastic piped system ?. There’s a few suppliers out there selling all plastic pipes and fittings systems that seem quite reasonable or a bit better price...

    Belt and disk sanders

Thanks everyone for all the tips and advice. I now know the Rutlands belt and disk sander will not be suitable. For lots of repeat small projects, maybe, but not an all-rounder.

    Belt and disk sanders

So do you actually own one of the Rutlands machines ?

    Belt and disk sanders

Has anyone got any ownership and use experience of the belt and disk sander currently on offer from Rutlands ?. Any good quality wise for the money say compared to the record version or are they all from the same far away factory but with different badges ?. Any comments gratefully received. I...

    Workshop heater to recommend ?

Can anyone recommend a workshop heater powered by diesel or kerosene. These would be the ideal fuels for me as I’ve got red diesel and heating oil available at bulk prices around here. Doesn’t need a massive output as the more I work my way through converting the outbuilding and insulating it...

    Am I being picky?

Quite true. My house was built/rebuilt on the site of an old longhouse that crumbled to the ground over 150 years ago. However, the barns I have are all original and pre-date the house by hundreds of years. They seem to have built better and had more respect for their barns than their houses...

    Jarrah work bench

Thanks guys-and much appreciate the 'inspiration' link John. When I lived in London, some years ago now, there was a furniture company that specialised and made everything in Jarrah. The wood itself with its huge pronounced grain and colour looked fantastic and I dare say the furniture itself...

    Jarrah work bench

I’ve been given some Jarrah railway sleepers-proper sleepers but clean and unused. I was thinking of building my first workbench in a couple of months using them-either a Roubo style or English, I’ve not decided yet. I know it’s a known as a ‘proper’ hard wood but is it going to be super...

    Tree Felling Fails

I’ll second that. Chainsaws and ladders definitely do not mix.

Good compressor for a newbie user

I want to buy a good quality compressor for good general use, but heavy duty enough to run nailers and any air tools in general that will no doubt lure me in. I’d like to be able to buy decent quality/ good compatible attachments for it too. I don’t know a great deal about brands and types, but...

    My first workbench

I know there's lots of different stuff on here spread over a wide time span on the subject, but can anyone help in some 'up to date' pointing me in the right direction to getting plans/ideas for a first workbench build?. I like the look/ ease of build of the English type and the Roubo, but...

    Common sense...

I used to work in a very rough part of North London and kept such a spray under my desk. We'd experienced several instances of desparate crackheads just pushing their way in to the building intent on grabbing anything they could. However, a friendly family connected copper pointed out to me one...

When does direct (e)mail go too far

I do find it quite irritating though. Everyday you can get unsolicited sales and marketing phone calls, all sorts of carp in the post mysteriously addressed to you personally but when you try to make a phone call, say on behalf of an elderly neighbour to help them out with a query or something...

    Tax question.

As you have already submitted your costs for this job within the current tax year, potentially to be offset against your turnover/profit, then the relating invoice for the work should also be included. Had you not submitted your costs or issued an invoice which is your 'tax point' then you can...

What barn paint did you use on the feather edge boards? Thanks.

    Woodworking publications

Thank you for the advice. I totally agree with the opinions expressed here, they do seem to be the same old thing over and over and yes, FW does seem to have a 'boutique' woodworkers sort of feel to it. I will see if I can get hold of some copies of Furniture and Cabinet Making a see what it...

    Woodworking publications

What's everybody reading out there. I subscribe to Fine Woodworking but which other publications are available. I've seen various titles disappear without trace over the last 5 years or so, but there must be others apart from FW?.

Workshop flooring construction, last minute doubts

Thanks for your info.-sand method sounding more encouraging. What sort of depth did the sand have?

Workshop flooring construction, last minute doubts

Hello Steve. I looked up the tech spec on Recticel and all they would say is that it has better compressive strength than most others. Anyway, the sand idea has potential if I was able to compact with a wacker plate or something?. Maybe do a dry sand cement mix so it sets up a bit. But then I...

Workshop flooring construction, last minute doubts

Thanks Steve. I would do this, but the concrete floor is not level, so really the fundamental problem is getting the insulation down in a level fashion so I can float the 22mm chipboard on top. Sand sounds interesting but won't it try and move or disperse a bit over time?.
