I'll stick them all in one message so as not to clutter up the main message area. Mafell DD40P doweller with systainer, 8, 10 and 12mm drills. 1000w model (they do a smaller 700w one too). This one has seen a fair amount of use, but it certainly has plenty of life left yet. They are about £450+...

Chess board in brown oak, ash and black walnut

Thanks, though the timber choices was almost by accident, it was the result of going through the scrap pile and finding nice bits. The plywood backing was from a sign for a local craft fair or something, that was in the workshop for recycling into jigs or similar. The black walnut was trimmed...

Chess board in brown oak, ash and black walnut

I don't really play... yet.. I know how each piece can move, and I understand checkmate and stalemate, but I've never had any serious games. I need to gain some lathe skills some time and make some chess pieces. I think that will take considerably longer to do than the board though. You're...

Chess board in brown oak, ash and black walnut

I used thick cyanoacrylate (superglue) and activator for the black walnut edging, I don't know how well or for how long it will hold securely, but it seems extremely strong at the moment. If it fails at some point, I will use something like titebond. I was a bit impatient and wanted to get it...

Thanks. The finish is oil and wax. Applied in about 10 minutes start to finish... (The oil dried very quickly). Craig

Chess board in brown oak, ash and black walnut

Hi, Here is a chess board I have been making over the last few weeks (15 mins here and there), finished today in the couple of spare hours I had. The only thing left is to put some black felt on the bottom. The centre is brown oak and white ash, and the surround is black walnut. It's not...

    Busy doing Nothing

I think the traditional way to plane a mitred face for box construction would be a "donkey's ear" shooting board: http://www.amgron.clara.net/planingpoints/donkeysearshoot/donkeysearindex.htm Never used one myself, but I've seen them in books and on websites a few times. Craig PS: Forgot to...

    Workbench in progress

Scrit: Ah, I should be okay with raw linseed oil then. We have clothes airers, I could commandeer one rung of that, perhaps, If I want to be double safe. Is there a safer traditional alternative to linseed oil? Thanks, Craig

I won't be doing a lot of grinding, I don't have a grindstone! :) However, I've had good luck with a coarse oilstone, and coarse sandpaper (60) spray-glued to a thick piece of glass. Probably takes longer, but I can do it without ear protection and in my living room!! Thanks, Craig

Sorry to reply twice, here is some information I just found about linseed oil spontaneously combusting, if anyone is interested: http://www.sintef-group.com/content/page1____7975.aspx?epslanguage=EN Thanks, Craig

    Workbench in progress

Paul C: For planing planks and similar, I'll have to have some kind of bench stop, the simplest method, I think, would be a batten cramped to the bench. Anything thin enough to flex will be planeable like this, and anything tall enough to fall over with this method could be done in my vice? I...

What species of wood is this?

orangetlh: Are "ray parenchyma" the same as medullary rays? I know to look for medullary rays in oak, but don't recognise them here. The ones I've seen before look like stretchmarks, and are a bit silvery, and streaky. Two votes for oak then. Are these bits useless, or can I resaw them into...

What species of wood is this?

Hi, My dad had a couple of big pieces of wood in his shed (as a stand for a second upright freezer) for a while, and we've always believed them to be oak. They're 7 x 7 x 26 inches and 7 x 7 x 34, they have some big old cracks and stuff, but I think there might be some small usable bits in...

    Workbench in progress

Dod: Yes - A hardwood insert or edging is a good idea.. It's a shame that I've glued up the top for mine already. Would there be a problem with the different woods expanding at a different rate in the humidity? A tail vice is something I can't imagine using really. My college course...
