    Fence on BAS 260 swift

Hi All (bas 260 swift owners), I was looking at this small bandsaw in a shop here, and the fence stood proud of the table on the far (non attached) side, something like 5mm. Is this normal? Cheers, Duncan

Tormek motor is 'bobbing' a little bit

My Tormek makes a very slow periodic sound: 'whung',....silence....,'whung'. When I took off the leather wheel to look at the motor, it became clear the motor is moving up and down a little bit in a periodic motion. It sort of makes very small jumps. Should I be worried and/or is there...

    bandsaw capacity, e.g. basato 1

In all the bandsaw descriptions I miss a sort of 'capacity' indication, like it will saw e.g. x" of pine board, or x" of Sapele. Why is this not mentioned? I am looking for a small bandsaw, no need for resawing, basically to build ship models and small boat accessoiries, and was considering...

sharpening Veritas 'snug plug' plug cutter

Hi, My Veritas 'snug plug' plug cutter is no longer producing shavings, merely dust. Is it possible to sharpen such a four teeth plug cutter, and if so how should I proceed? Or should I have it sharpened? Regards, Duncan

    freehand drilling, at an angle

Hello, I need to drill a 1/2" hole at an angle of 45 degrees through 1/2" Mahogany. Unfortunately the part can not be put under a drill press, as it is 24 feet long and boatshaped. :D Can somebody point me out how to achieve this, without chipping or breaking out the edges? Kind regards...

how much tear out is acceptable

I generally buy my wood machined to size, but often (and in the last order of some exotic African hard wood I keep forgetting the name of) there is serious tear out, that will not easily plane, scrape or sand out. I was wondering how much tear out you would accept... Regards, Duncan

experience aftermarket grinding stones for Tormek

Anybody experience with the coarse after market grinding stones for the Tormek like: http://www.fine-tools.com/Tormek.html (scroll down) I found I need to regularly take out the diamond tool on the original stone to keep material removal continuing when regrinding the very tough A2 of the Lee...

    3m micro abrasive paper

Last week I was given a demonstration (in the US) by a professional boatbuilder that used 3m micro abrasive paper for the 'scary sharp method' with wd40 as a lubricant. The paper is sticky backed and much more durable than autobodyshop wet-n-dry paper. In his shop he only used a couple of sheets...

accelerating colour change in African padouk

I made some parts from African padouk and Sipo mahogany, which would match when the padouk has reached its terminal color of coffee brown. The test piece I put in the window changed colour in roughly a week. However, the work pieces in the room seem not to change colour at all, they remain...

    online source for dozuki ripcut

Has anyone found an online seller of a dozuki ripcut saw in Europe? Alternatively, would a ripcut kataba be a good option for cutting dovetails, or else one of these mini dozuki ripcut saws? Dunca

    Imitation multimaster by Bosch

I just saw Bosch now manufactures an 'imitation' of the Fein multimaster the so-called PMF 180 E MULTI, with remarkable likeness in the sawblades for 99 euros at the local chain of DIY stores. Anybody already experience with this machine? Duncan

shooting engrain of slats with rounded edges

I am in the process of making a number of bench 'gratings' for the boat consisting of 2 1/2" x 1" slats. The slats have rounded over edges on the long sides and square ends, so they have a constant cross section. I first made them to length and used a shooting board to clean up the end grain of...

    glazing of tormek stone

I have the tormek nearly a year, and one thing I noticed when changing the bevel on plane blades (A2 Veritas) the stone cuts very effective for a short while, but tends to glaze, requiring often use of the reactivating stone or even using the diamond cutting tool to expose a fresh stone surface...

rpm for Veritas snug plug cutter

What is the recommended rpm for cutting 6, 8 and 10 mm plugs from mahogany and padouk with a Veritas snug plug cutter? It is not mentioned in the instruction sheet, but was probably on the blister packing I binned.... Thanks in advance, Duncan

how fast should the disk of a random orbit sander spin ?

Hello, I just bought a new random orbit sander, the small festool one, and was wondering how fast the disk should spin. In my memory the disk of my old machine, a bosch spun much faster, but that one did not have a brake system. I used the sander on surfaces with various curvature and using...

wire edge scratching super fine stone

I have this recurring problem that when I have used either my coarsest waterstone and recently the Tormek to remove a nick in a chisel or to change the primary bevel angle, the resulting burr on the back is that strong that it puts scratches in my polishing stone. This only occurs with the...

difficultu in getting square edge with Tormek

I recently bought a Tormek 2006 ( and a grading stone :D ), but I have some difficulty grinding a primary bevel square to the sides of chisels. I check the chisel rests to the two side of the jig, and the clamp is parallel to the jig. Wider chisels and planeblades deviate less from square...

    Tormek grading stone

Two days ago I bought a Tormek 2006, just the basic package. I was wondering if the grading stone is something you use regularly. Is it necessary to use the grinding wheel on the 'fine setting' before proceeding to honing, or can you just go from the 'coarse setting' to the honing stage...

    planingthin tapered strips

I would like to make a laminated sailboat tiller, sort of a tapered and curved stick. The original was laminated from strips of constant thickness and the stick was tapered after the lamination from approx 1 3/4" to 1 1/4" . This means some of the layers end short. Now I have read that the...

Recommendation for joints in wide and rel. thin stock

I have been reading a lot on this forum, especially the hand tools section, and decided to join today. Most of my woodworking is boat related, but I have taken two classes in furniture making. My question is the following: I would like to make a frame out of 8 cm x 2.2 cm thick mahogany. The...
