    Good beginning lathe.

Any good advice for a first time lathe? I know a guy who reclaims school lathes and will sell then to me. I'm guessing it'll need some tuning up on them seeing as they're old school lathes, so are they worth a gander or will I be better off buying a new one off Axminster or something?

    Dust extraction record Power Cx3000

Ah right cheers. But yes, I'm essentially working from a garage and will attach it to individual machines as and when. Sanding I'm going to limit to outside if I can help it. And as for fine dust, I might invest in a fine dust filter if I'm impressed with the performance

    Dust extraction record Power Cx3000

Hey guys, I just ordered the cx3000 from Machinemart for about £270. At the moment it seems to me to be a sensible purchase. Sensible because I've finally relented and invested in dust extraction. Before now I preferred to spend the dollar on tools rather than health and safety. Anyone with...

Which (low cost) wood to learn/practise with?

I got some luck asking the lads at the technical department in college, they got a few bits of wood they're always chucking out. A mate of mine tells me that travis Perkins give him their pallets for free. I tried canvassing local businesses and a lot of them tell me that they got to return...

Which (low cost) wood to learn/practise with?

You could always go for reclaimed wood and pallets. I got this jig made by Izzy Swan called the pallet pal, used to take apart pallets quickly and is fairly easy to make. You'll need to prep the wood with surface planer and thicknesser but in exchange I psychologically feel like I got an...

How to make money from woodworking?

Weekend warrior here, so far everything I've built up to date is for myself or the family. however, if I wanted to make money to at the very least recuperate my costs from buying so many tools, how could i go about it? Strictly a hobbyist here with no formal carpentry training. Do you guys sell...

    where are my trunnions?

Yeah that would be a good idea. Next problem is that I'm relative new to woodworking and all I have atm are salvaged SPF and wouldn't know where to get a piece of hardwood. How would I go about tapering it either? I'm not bothered by the mitre fence because I also have a compound sliding mitre...

Help me buy a tablesaw (subs £500)

Sorry I must've gotten something confused then. I think it is in American terms (where I'm getting most of my woodworking knowledge from) that site saws have the arbor directly connected to the motor whereas cabinet maker saws have the arbor driven by a belt hence a smoother operation?

Help me buy a tablesaw (subs £500)

Cheers, I'll have to give startrite a look I keep reading that belt driven motors are more efficient and less dust gets trapped in the motor as opposed to induction ones. The other caveat I have is that I have a small car so picking one up is going to be a problem. I'll have to rely on a...

Help me buy a tablesaw (subs £500)

I want to get a new tablesaw, but I'm swamped with what to get. Is cast iron tabletops really that nice? I'm thinking between getting a cheap one or pushing it as far as I can and be done with buying one at that. I can't have it too big but portability is not a factor. Ultimately it just has to...

    where are my trunnions?

I'll try to upload a pic pf the saw as a whole tomorrow. Like Shed9 says, there is no mitre slot, it's a steel bar on a 45 degree angled bar running on bearings. If it is indeed a site saw then I'm outta luck jigging it for accurate cuts? I just noticed this earlier rutlands co...

    where are my trunnions?

Hi there, First time poster here. I've been getting into woodworking for a few months now and for some reason kept justifying the need to keep buying a new tool and getting in trouble with the missus for it lol. Anyways, I was lucky enough to get a table saw for free off a relative's relative...
