    Quick Question

Whilst looking into new lathes, I've noticed that several seem to have different tapers in the head and tailstock, IE 1MT in the headstock and 2MT in the tail. Is there any particular reason for this? Does it benefit the lathe in some way or is i just a cost cutting measure from the factory...

    Best adhesive

I use Gorilla glue for all of my bat repairs and whenever I splice in a handle. It is much better to use than regular PVA and I haven't had any problems with a repair yet (barring people not using their bat how it's supposed to bee used...)

    Little Dish

Morning chaps, A couple of weeks ago, I thought I'd have a go a tmaking a little dish from a bit of Wood I got out of the HoW starter kit. All was going fine until I got to clening up the backside, reversed onto the cole jaws tried to take a few cuts to remove the spigot, then bang. To my...

More pens and a few questions

Double the cost o the materials (ie willow, binding, handles, stickers, scuff sheets, abrasive). I don't make much out of it, and will need to bump the price up to a level I'm not comfortable with come January as the cost of willow suitable for cricket bats is rising at a stupid rate

More pens and a few questions

Thanks for the advice. I think £15 may be a little much. With the cricket bats I make, I pretty much double what it costs me to make one as the price. I guess £12 would be fair for a twist pen?

More pens and a few questions

Hello chaps, All I'm confident that my lathe can handle is pens, so here's some more. 3 twistys in oak, one in purpleheart (present for the Mrs) and a fountain pen in cherry for the mothership to write my wedding invites with. All pens are finished to 600 grit abranet, 2 coats of sanding...

    Best grinder for tools

http://www.tool-net.co.uk/p-350779/clar ... ApoO8P8HAQ This is the type of grinder I have at the moment. have been sharpening it freehand, but am in the process of sorting a jig out. Is there any particular place that's best to grind on the sanding belt? I had been using near the toolrest at...

    "Clone" lathes

Most of the lathes similar to the axi seem to have a 1mt headstock and 2mt tailstock, whereas the axi has 2mt in both and a bigger 8tpi x 1" spindle. Other than that, they all seem to be the same machine, with slight variables in speeds or in charnwoods case a rev counter

    Strange Question

Got a bit of a strange question. Are there any woods that have a blue colour once finished? I know there are stains and dyes I can use, but are there any that actually have a natural blue colour?

    Advice

Yeah. I've noticed that. I have the rutlands dakota chuck, but the awvsl is out of stick at the minute. Good thing I'm not getting it straight away!

    Advice

Having had a chance to look at both tje cl3 anf the awvsl1000 in the last few days, I've made my mind up to go with the axi. Mainly because all yhe extra gubbins to turn outboard and the stand are either included or don't cost the earth at a later date. I feel they will both be more than...

HELP please - Lignum Vitae bowl / cricket mallet

Hi Glynne, I have used many different mallets before starting bat making and since. The best ones on the market are the ones that millichamp and hall or puma sell. They're heavier than the hardwood used in the standard ones. Feel free to drop me a PM. I hand knock in any bat that comes through...

HELP please - Lignum Vitae bowl / cricket mallet

Being a bat maker, (and owning a LV mallet) I would say that there is no need for one. Just like thick edges, it's a fad. For professionals (majers and shops) that constnantly knock bats in, it is handy. However in the wrong hands and used inappropriately, it can kill your favourite bat.

    2015 Woodturning Challenge

Maybe do away with the points scoring throughout the year. Still have a monthly winner that is voted for by the entrants only? Most votes wins and you can't vote for yourself? That way people can enter when they get time and not feel intimidated by a yearly comp.

    Advice

Thanks for the info chaps. THe CL4 will be quite a way out of my budget. Seems like there are several different similar models to the awvsl on the market, which says to me that they are all made abroad and badged up differently. It really is between the AWVSL type model and the CL3. Looking...

    Advice

Thanks for the advice guys. Just a few questions- Is a cast iron bed better than bars? I take it the CL3 doesn't come with a stand? Is there much difference between 1MT and 2MT spindles other than size? From what I can see, the AWVSL comes with a stand, has a cast iron bed and is 2MT with a...

    Advice

I certainly need the length as I'll be using it for binding cricket bat handles amongst other things. Want to use it for a bit of everything turning wise, so a good allrounder is required. Was thinking something along the lines of the AWVSL1000 from axminster. Tools aren't included in the...

    Advice

Hi guys, SWMBO is looking into buying me a new lathe for my birthday (not til april). The budget I've got is about £500. Ideally I'd like new, but realise that won't necessarily be possible. Variable speed is desirable but not essential, a minimum 40" bed length is a must. What do you all...

    Adjusting a tailstock

Thanks, it's the horizontal alignment that is out. It was worse when I first picked it up (2nd hand of ebay), but since taking it apart and cleaning, everything is much smoother, but I still can't quite get the alignment. Will give that ago, it's out slightly to the left if you look from above...

    Adjusting a tailstock

Hello all, I have a bit of a problem. I have a rexxon 12D lathe (Similar to any other brand that has a single long round bar) and the tailstock is about 1-2mm out of alignment with the headstock. Does anyone have an advice on how to sort this problem out? I know it's not much, but it would...
