    restoring an antique desktop

Few more photos after an initial clean http://imgur.com/a/42csb The most annoying part are those big white marks which goes away if I make them wet (and come back after the wood/leather dry out). There is also one corner where lots of paint is missing and lacquer is completely gone. And finally...

    restoring an antique desktop

Ok.. I tried to wipe the dust and dirt with a kitchen towel and wood cleaner. After first minute it become very obvious that the surface is lacquered. I guess that proves Matt's point that it's a repo. My questions are: - what is the best way to clean a white ring after (presumably) hot...

    Plane for squaring boards

First of all thank you for your advices. Just for the record the unfortunate plane was Silverline No 5 (not 6) http://www.transtools.co.uk/hand-tools/ ... plane-no-5. The issues I'm having with the plane are: - knob fall off (I can't screw it back) - lever cap jumps out (again, screw to blame)...

    Plane for squaring boards

I need to buy a plane(s) for squaring boards. I was trying to live with a budget jack plane no 6 but it was difficult to setup and eventually fall apart. I like to think it wasn't my fault but I can't be sure ;) I'm a beginner and from what I've read/seen on YT I ought to go for a high quality...

    Problem with planing

After reading your comments and watching "Rough to ready" by Rob Cosman I'm terrified how many mistakes I made ;-) Apart from the technique even my plane wasn't sharp enough... I need to get a proper sharpening stone first before I will damage more wood.

Large quantities of beech from the eastern Europe

Yes, shipping a 60m3 cost 70-80% of the timber value.

    Problem with planing

Thank you for you help. I read all the comments and after some thinking and adjusting my equipment ;-) I realised it was an incorrect planing direction and plane setting. I must admit that learning this particular skill is a very frustrating process. ps. to achieve a perfect flatness should I...

Large quantities of beech from the eastern Europe

I have not upper limits for quantity - especially if we talk about logs.

    Problem with planing

I'm using hand plane No.5. It's sharp but not super sharp (I sharpened it with a £10 chisel sharpening system). The plan is set to take as little as possible (maybe half of a millimeter). The other strange thing is that the wood is getting dirt black in certain areas. Please see pictures below.

    Problem with planing

Very good question but I have no idea how to identify the direction of grain for those boards. I checked both direction with similar results ;-)

    Problem with planing

I'm trying to plane a reclaimed white oak and I'm coming across 2 major problems: 1) sometimes when I'm making a pass the plane gets stuck. It looks like it takes more material than it suppose to. If I continue pushing with more force i will damage the surface. How to avoid it and what to do...

Large quantities of beech from the eastern Europe

It might look this way but it's not that mysterious. I got into woodworking quite recently and I fall in love with it. My biggest irritation was price of timber so I was looking how to solve my problem. I explored many alternatives (which included speaking to members of my family) and the...

Large quantities of beech from the eastern Europe

Well.. I must admit that I didn't think about the certification. Everything else is covered. My uncle sends 25 to 50 tones of goods to the UK every week. We understand transport, duty and VAT quite well.

How to control a power planer?

How to control a power planer?

I bought some very nice reclaimed oak boards for a great price. The only "problem" is that I have to plane them. Let me say that my experience with planing on a scale from 0 to 10 is about 1. I though that the best idea would be to buy a power planer and it's going to be a straight forward...
