    Smoking morticer chisel

I have rather a lot of mortices (mortii?) to cut in hardwoods over the next few weeks, and although I do have a ready supply of new old stock Wadkin 3/4" chisels, I should like to be able to sharpen them efficiently. I am a bit of a tightwad and have never paid topwhack for a sharpening stone of...

    Smoking morticer chisel

Agreed it is blunt, but can I ask what the general concensus is for sharpening mortice chisels is? Do I really have to fork out £50 odd for a guided countersink-alike to sharpen them, or is there a genius other method? TIA Caz Edit - Sounds like the OP may not have a sharpening kit for...

    Udentified wood

the first pic colour isn't quite right for the Elm I have. But of course that means nowt - cameras don't always tell the truth colour-wise, do they? Grain pattern is Elm for sure though. I suppose when it has been left for some time, as mine has, the colour may change somewhat. IME Elm smells...

    About thick cap-irons

I have learnt a lot from this thread, in spite of its politics, and thank you all for the lesson. I am always pleased to learn. Caz

    About thick cap-irons

I do understand the concept and purpose of the cap-iron - I just have some trouble appreciating the idea (nearly put fact there) that the two piece design can work as well as the stanley version. Doubtless it works - I do have a few of the Stay-sets and one Clifton version, and I know it works...

    Worm drive saws.

Think mine is a US Skil. It works superbly. I would not hesitate to buy another one, but doubt I will ever have to as mine, whilst old, is built like the proverbial. I am not sure if I have ever recommended a tool before. I would recommend this without hesitation. Not for fine joinery or cabinet...

    About thick cap-irons

OK - now that someone else (of superior standing) to me has raised this I am going to jump on board and profess a total lack of understanding how the Clifton and StaySet cap-irons can possibly work as well as a one piece. Unless I am missing a fundamental aspect of the purpose of the cap-iron it...

    Worm drive saws.

MMUK You will never regret it - they really are a different beast. Mine chewed up and spat out all comers yesterday. Plus when running it smells like a lawnmower! (Oil!!) Hopefully my rant will persuade others to try them. Once they do I am sure they'll agree. Shame they can't get them so easy...

    Worm drive saws.

I had to finish a bunk bed project today, made from old sound boards from an church organ builder (Mr R Shaftoe - a local legend I never had the fortune to meet, but I now own a load of his tools and materials, and my daughter sleeps on a bed made form a selection of mahogany, rosewood and oak...

    slick?

Wizard Indeed - that is what I know as a slick. Mine is very different really - but it is certainly not an ordinary socket chisel. The hoop at the top of the handle is almost certainly a more recent addition, although it still looks very old. In any event - the framing chisels I have are not...

    slick?

Wizard is right, the blade is about 15mm thick near the handle. I did say 20, and indeed it is 20mm as it runs into the socket, but the fattest part of the blade proper is about 15mm. This is its measurement on the useable part of the blade nearest the socket. It tapers, quite gently, to around...

    English Bedrocks

I have an 8 and a 5 1/4 and can confirm that both the blades and bodies are USA made. I believe the 5 1/4's were made for schools but for some reason I did think they were made in England too. That may well mean I have taken it for granted, but may also mean I have seen one. The blade on mine...

    Mortice and Tenon jig

I own a Trend M + T jig, which has been used once, and was looking for some accessories. Found this - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Jig-Making-fo ... 1e8a37ad76 Ridiculous, but it did make me wonder whether or not one could easily be made - it seems a relatively easy project if you had a way to...

recent haul - Charnley stone? Side snipe?

BB Thanks mate - to be honest they will go in the for sale box; maybe I'll advertise them on one of the razor/knife forums? The grainy one I am unsure of - I am probably oversimplifying things, but with all that variation in colour and to some extent texture, is it not likely that the grit will...

recent haul - Charnley stone? Side snipe?

BB Thanks for your input - these are the best I can do at the moment - taken on a phone. I have tried to get one dry and one wet. The other one turned up this morning. Is a little bit dished on one side, worth flattening or leave it dished? and the new one

it is 620mm long, and weighs about a kilo. 20mm thick blade near the socket. I have a large bruzz but this is big.

    Hardest Job Ever

Lost my Dad 4 years ago - I wanted to make the coffin but it was felt it was not a good idea. Bluddy family politics. I am sure you did him proud. Well done. Sorry for your loss. Caz
