Need advice restoring the Virgin Mary

Thanks Colin, its very clear now. I see it means making the wedges will be simpler as they will be quite thin - obvious I guess now but it didn't occur to me at the time. I will sand her down (carefully) this week and see if I can expose the wood properly. Cheers, Chad.

Need advice restoring the Virgin Mary

Colin, I'm still a little confused so a pic would be great .

Need advice restoring the Virgin Mary

It really does look like two pieces glued together and then carved, though I guess as you said it is still safer to use a sliver and dowels rather than try force the rest of the split. Also, good point that splitting and planing would take away some of the carving along the seams and cause a...

Need advice restoring the Virgin Mary

SWMBO inherited this little statuette of the Immaculate Conception when her mum died, who got it from a monastery in Singapore many years ago when they were tearing it down. It spent the last 15 years in the garden and is not in a good way as a result. Its actually a very nice looking...

    which LN hand planes?

I have the LV LA Jack, Smoother and Block. I also have the 25, 38 and 50 degree blades - the first two came with the Jack and Smoother respectively and I bought the 50 seperately. What is so wonderful is that these blades are interchangeble between the Jack and Smoother. For the bit of panel...

    Hi from Canada

Hi Flyer, welcome to the forum! I am also Canadian but living in Oxford, UK at the moment. My brother lives in Victoria, where abouts in BC are you from? P.S. Also looking forward to seeing pics of your work. Chad.

General questions about veneer and veneering.

Great stuff, not sure where to get anything other than brass bar though. Had a look and the SIP looks good, I have their 14" bandsaw and am very happy with the quality for money in that - so all things being equal their biscuit jointer is probably pretty decent.

    How accurate is accurate enough?

Interesting what Paul said about other people not noticing. I read a similar thread in another forum and someone chipped in and said "The best way to hide you mistakes is to NOT TELL ANYONE ABOUT THEM! They won't notice them that way." When I started WW last year my perfectionism really...

General questions about veneer and veneering.

All pieces will be flat. Once I have got to grips with the flat stuff I will look at doing a project with curved pieces. I have tried it a bit but still need to make an attachment for the fence - a pointed block in line with the blade. The little bits I have done came out pretty well once I...

General questions about veneer and veneering.

Thanks for all the replies. Alarm bells are ringing and I feel even more nervous about slicing up my oak and murdering it now. Funny cause when I started in August without a sinlge tool and too much confidence I made a toolchest that came out pretty well, a bookcase, two dovetail boxes and a...

General questions about veneer and veneering.

I've been reading up loads on veneering and even cut some on my bandsaw and had a go at glueing up little pieces with titebond. Vacuum veneering seems to be really effective but very expensive . I certainly don't want to outlay that much cash at this point so I will have to settle for...

My coping saw, WIP but in working condition

I also had concerns about twisting, but then I do have two huge boards of beech to experiment with :D. The main reason why I wanted to stick with these holders is purely for the looks, but I will probably end up using the steel bar approach as I already have the M10 rod and bits. My design...

3D design packages that won't break the bank.

John H, thanks I will look for those Dave R tutorials and go through them. Ike, you're absolutley right in what you said about Rhino, my mistake, and I have editted the entry to reflect that. I used it many years ago for a short time because a jeweller friend of mine introduced it to me and it...

My coping saw, WIP but in working condition

Heres what I planned: On one end the shank would go through a slot in the saw arm (handle?) and a simple pin would hold it against the wood. On the other end I was going to make one of those tear-drop thingys and attach it to the shank so the blade could be brought under tension. I will get...

3D design packages that won't break the bank.

I think my problems with SketchUp lie in the fact that I am used to a very 'mechanical' creation process and more in-depth user interface that I got used to using AutoCad (way back) and other 3D design packages more recently. For example, in GMax I select the basic shape I want and then type in...

3D design packages that won't break the bank.

For those like me who are not comfortable with CAD/CAM software nor SketchUp there are always alternatives. While I find SketchUp great for designing houses and laying out rooms I also find it overly simplified and have yet to design a complete piece of furniture without pulling my hair out...

    Absolute beginner seeks advice!

Hi Keith and welcome to the fourm! I am in no way an expert finisher and one will be along shortly. But I have used clear Liberon Black Bison wax on an oak box I made and absolutely love it. Easy to apply, not too smelly, and really brought out the wood and gave it a deep satin lustre. You...
