    Ash framing

    Hi Buzzy, I make beehives too. Do you also make the frames, or just the boxes? Best wishes Bill

    Advice on Pitch Pine:

    FWIW I've also got some old pitch pine, from a Welsh chapel roof. Haven't had the problems with excessive pitch build up that others report here but it does split easily & I wouldn't try turning it on a lathe or router cutting it with anything but the sharpest cutters. It makes lovely kitchen...

    Lee Valley chisels

    Does anyone have any experience or know of any reviews of Lee Valley's chisels? They have some quite juicy looking ones in their on line catalogue here: [url]http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx?c=2&cat=1&p=41504&ap=1 (The advertisers speak very highly of them.) Thanks Bill

    using waterstone

    Thanks, folks. I was using the same technique as for an oilstone: I've tried pulling the blade instead of pushing it and of course no nicks. By a micro bevel I was thinking of both a secondary bevel and also a very small bevel on the back (flat) side of a plane blade, so as for example to...

    using waterstone

    I've recently bought a japanese waterstone (6000 grade) to try out and it certainly produces a fine polished surface quicker than a comparable oilstone. But however I try I can't avoid nicking the stone when I start sharpening a micro bevel on a blade. Then it takes me a while to restore the...

    Clifton planes anyone?

    For what it's worth I love my Cliftons. Unlike some other contributors, I've never had any quality problems with them and would have been able to use the bench planes right out of the box. I like the traditional look and feel of them and ease of adjustment. But price was a factor in choosing...

    Drying / Preparing Felled Timber

    The main issue is safety: most sawmilling operators try to avoid dealing with the smaller stuff for that reason. The usual workshop tools just aren't designed to work with the sort of material you will be trying to convert into boards. You can - with care - produce a small amount of useable...

    sharpening record cabinet scraper

    Thanks very much, everyone. There's plenty of information there to keep me going and I'll try setting it up this evening. It is a no 80, by the way. Best wishes, Bill

    sharpening record cabinet scraper

    I recently picked up a record cabinet scraper (bit like the veritas one) at a boot sale. It's got a badly worn double ended blade which I'm having trouble sharpening prior to burnishing it. (It's a lethal thing to sharpen, being double ended, and I don't like to offer it up to the wetstone...

    Hardwood pricing!

    It sounds to me as though you've costed the project based on kilned oak? (If it helps to know it, for my projects I source local Welsh kilned oak for between £15 and 30 per cubic foot, probably over 95% of it at the bottom end figure.) Why not offer a quote in green oak? That's what I'd use...

    Flat working/assembly surface

    It's a problem. I'm using a 2 metre piece of thick kitchen worktop left over from a job at the moment. It's stayed flat for about 5 months so far but I check it each time before using it. I set it up on trestles. Expensive if you have to buy it separately though. :(

    Portable Saw Mill suggestions

    I've got one of these things, which I bought from my local hardware supplier. It's made by Oregon. There are a few of points to think about. First, they are quite slow. Expect to take about 5 mins per 12 foot, 18 inch hardwood plank. That's a lot of 2 stroke as you will have the chainsaw...

    other toolstorage

    Lovely stuff, Bernard. Like the others, I like seeing how other people store their tools. It's surprising how many spanners, allen keys, snips, files etc we use in our woodworking shops. I made the mistake (?) of building separate workshops for wood and metalwork, about 20 metres (I've just...

    Workshop Heaven?

    I bought a bottle of camellia oil. Paid by paypal and the item arrived next day. Same experience when I bought a replacement block plane blade. I'd have no hesitation in using them again. :D

    Respiratory protection, what do you use?

    Hi, just seen this. I also tried using the cheap disposables but they just don't work with specs. Looked at the airshield but the time between re- charges seemd very short (about an hour or so if I remember right) and didn't like the idea of carrying the weight of the batteries on my head .So...

    Axminster low angle block plane

    Depends what you want it for. I bought one about a year ago. It comes branded as "Groz" and is fine for the general run of stuff. Doesn't take 100 percent perfect shavings off difficult end grain but I wouldn't think the stanley one would be any better: I suspect you'd have to go for LN or...

    veritas flush plane

    OK if you have to buy a plane iron specially for the job. But it wouldn't need to be highest quality stuff & many of us have got old ones/spares hanging around.. Best wishes Bill

    veritas flush plane

    I caught sight of a picture of one of these chisel planes in the Rutlands catalogue and it seems to me that it would be easy(ish) to make one up out of an old plane iron. (Perhaps a homemade handle could be attached to the iron with a shallow dovetailed tenon..). Has anybody tried it?

    SIP 01332 10" Table Saw

    thanks everyone. You can undo the side panels on the saw but it involves removing 6 machine screws for each one whllst crouching under the table extensions. The dust blower sounds a good idea: I'll try blowing it from under the saw with the air line: might also work for the bits that get into...

    SIP 01332 10" Table Saw

    I agree with all this: it's a brilliant saw and you'd probably have to spend a LOT more money to get anything significantly better. I managed to get mine second hand for £300. The drive belt hadn't ever been properly tightened and was pretty shredded. It's a standard item from the auto...
