How sharp, how often & how?

I returned to woodturning a few years ago. I realised that I was having terrible problems with end grain tear out, posted a few helps on here, all came back with the same reply - sharpen your tools! I purchased a Tormek, I keep all my tools as sharp as razor blades now (I wondered why Tormek...

    RAS Dust Extraction

Jack Thank you for showing an interest, if I was to make a Mk3 - I think I would incorporate dust extraction below the cutting length of the whole blade (perhaps with small holes). I am more than happy with Mk2 at the moment. Brian

    RAS Dust Extraction

Having just acquired a Dewalt Powershop RAS, I quickly realised that the amount of 'dust' it generated was too much for the dust extraction port on the blades safety guard. I set about designing another method of collecting the dust from this machine. Not one to re-invent the wheel I scoured the...

    Union Gradute Shortbed

I got a full length Union Graduate, the money I spent on it fitting an inverter and speed control I could have bought a new Jet machine. Its a loverly machine but is limited in capacity.

    Pits in my turning

This used to plague me, I now keep my tools super sharp and only take a few cuts with the scraper before I sharpen it (leaving the burr on the tool edge) hope this helps. I also seal end grain before I sand it with a sanding sealer.

    Spalted Holly

Cut a Holly Tree yesterday and to my surprise it had 'spaltling' all through it, so I could not resist and mounted it on my lather to see what it looks like turned! Here is a picture of the outside - all I need to do is dry it before I complete the job!
