    Hilka Pro-Craft battery charger info

Hi All, I've been given a Hilka Pro-Craft drill set with the charger supply missing. It has 18V lithium batteries with the charger circuit built in to the battery. The charger supply seems to be (from online photo's) plug top supply with a lead that plugs into the charger. Looked on the 'net...

    Bureau Fittings

Many thanks for your responses. Now I know the pull outs are called lopers that helped hugely. I found https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/mechanism-for-a-drop-lid-buruau-t26841.html which is more complex than the original I think. Marshall's seem to have everything for cabinet work. If I...

    Worth keeping elder wood?

By coincidence, yesterday I spoke to an artist who has a studio below our office and she was given elder for whittling when at Art In Action. So my deduction is that is could be used for carving etc. Cheers Andy

    Bureau Fittings

Hi, Just bought a cheap second hand bureau and I need some fittings. I don't know what they're called but it fits onto the drop leaf and pulls the bars out. So any one know what they're called and any possible suppliers. Cheers Andy

    Sharpening chisels/planes

I've bought a few secondhand planes and it's easy to tell the hand sharpened ones: the cutting edge is not square. I know this is not 100% proof but I always use a honing guide, it takes bit longer but you don't accumulate any errors of not sharpening it square. Eventually you run out of...

    Fully threaded Cap head screws

Hi All, I used my new M6 die from Avon and it cut well. My previous experience was with carbon steel die on 10mm and it tore up the threads. So lesson to me: get good tools and problems go away. Many thanks to all Andy

    Fully threaded Cap head screws

Hi, Thanks for the responses. I did think about running a die down them but I have tried that previously (a years or so ago). The bolts were very tough and the thread came out poorly formed. Having said that it may have used a cheapy die. I'll give it a go as I have new dies (Avon). Regarding...

    Fully threaded Cap head screws

Hi, I'm trying to find some fully threaded M6 x 40 cap head high tensile screw for the 4-way tool post I've made but I'm having no luck. As I seem to find that most are only about 25mm threaded should I modify my tool post or look for something different. I don't think I really need high...

    What wood could this be?

Many thanks for your replies. I sent a sample to a veneer supplier and they found that the best match was African Mahogany. I guess this doesn't confirm the wood but at least it has got me matching veneer. I was an external "hardwood" door possibly fitted in the 60's so I guess that still...

    What wood could this be?

Many thanks for your responses. The wood in the photo is planed. I'll try and get better photo this evening. I seem to have lost all my photoshop software to do good colour correction since I bought a new computer. I've contacted a veneer supplier and suggested I send a small sample to him to...

    What wood could this be?

I hope it's not teak, I've just seen the cost of the veneer!!! £5/sqft The pic on the forum shows it darker than it really is, different monitors I guess (I'm at work now). Cheers Andy

    What wood could this be?

Hi All, I am making a small writing box/slope from an old hardwood door. It's probably no earlier than the mid 60's probably later. It's a red wood and I would like to know what wood it is likely to be. I've guessed it to be sapele because that was heavily used in veneered doors back than and...

    What to start doing

Hi 64, One of the first things I made was a bed with the help of my father in law. Then a bench and then a kitchen. Many years later I made a bureau. I've probably made many things in between but can't think of them at the moment. I recently made a knitting box for my daughter from some old...

Help needed lining up the centres on a Perform CCSL

I think I may be able to help here. As soon as you add any device eg a chuck, that forces the work piece to be in line with the head stock now requires the tail stock to line up. Whereas between centres the centre can be considered a a point contact, although it is more of a small circle. Andy

Help needed lining up the centres on a Perform CCSL

Sorry guys I did reply last night but the post is missing. This my major problem at the moment. This another point I'm struggling with. The double ended morse taper will only line it up at the point of application. As soon as you move the tails stock it could become out of alignment. This...

Help needed lining up the centres on a Perform CCSL

Hi, I've a Perform CCSL and the tailstock has a large amount of play between itself and the bed. I'm making some guide blocks to bolt to it with adjustment so I can line it up and fix it in the correct position. My problem is how to line up it with the head stock and also to line up the head...

    Another sharpening stone ID

Mr Stanford: Does your suggestion get rid of the rusty looking stains. I have a really nice one with the original label on the back. https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/download/file.php?id=14705&mode=view I'm sure these are supposed to be "white". Cheers Andy

    Small adjustable Reamer

Hi, Tried the D reamer method but I couldn't anneal it well. I only have a propane torch and could only get it just red. I need some fire bricks or a little oven made from thermalite or celcon blocks. Tried drilling and boring and had some success. I got the ID good fit but I fluffed the...

    ML7 cross slide question

Hi, Had a few more minutes than expected. It is definitely 1 div per thou. I tried it against a rule and it correlates to 1 turn per 0.1". Also did some trial cuts. Don't know how I missed that the first time I tried it. Must be the drugs or lack of. Sunny Crete tomorrow. Yipee Cheers Andy

    ML7 cross slide question

Hi Jason, That's a good correlation. I'll do a few more test and see if 10tpi stacks up. I may do them this evening but if I can't I'm off to sunny Crete for 10days on Tuesday so it'll have to wait until I'm back. Cheers Andy
