How would you rate the UK's handling of this pandemic?

Robin, whilst I applaud your perseverance I think there comes a point at which you are flogging a dead horse. Some folk are just not interested in changing their opinion, facts or science be damned. Chris152 nailed it with his post, I think it makes people feel like they've been smart enough...

Flying V bass build (luthiers look away now!)

Hey everyone. I don't frequent this site much anymore but I thought I should update this old thread. Nearly 3 years after starting this I've just finished it. It got shelved for a good while, life got in the way as it does, a workshop move, house renovation and my twin girls were born, putting a...

    Snooker cue and ebony

Have you looked at rocklite ebano? It's a sustainable alternative to real ebony. https://www.rocklite.co.uk/phdi/p1.nsf/ ... ent&part=3 I've used it for the fretboard of a bass I've been building, most luthiers who have used it seem to rate it highly.

I'll be surprised if the little scrote has got the minerals to actually reveal himself here!

    Is this Yew?

Yeah if you plane down to some fresh wood it will be obvious

I love yew, I love yew more

Only 4 years later and finally used a bit of this yew, put some through the wide belt sander and it came up lovely. Glued some up to be the top for a kind of a dog hutch thing (don't ask…!) Looks very shiny as it's just been sprayed. Will be making my next bass guitar out of some of this.

    Mahogany Substitute

Don't know where you are but Yandles in Somerset stock true mahogany. I bought a board earlier in the year to make my bass guitar, bit pricey though.

It’s chisel time! Chisel me timbers! Your fav chisels!

I have the set of 6 kirschen and I rate them, in daily use in a joinery workshop. They take and hold a very good edge and will take a blow from a hammer no problem. Might not be ideal for dovetailing but can't confirm this as we have a multi head dovetailing machine!

    Axminster Precision Rules

I've got the axi precision 150mm too and I have to say I can see it perfectly clearly with no issues so maybe it's an issue with the lighting in your workshop? Also got the axi ruler stop that fits fine...

Flying V bass build (luthiers look away now!)

It's at the finishing stage, so shouldn't be too much longer, just waiting for work to calm down a bit so I can lacquer and polish it. I'll attempt to make a recording when it's finished, although I'm a better wood worker than I am bass player!

Flying V bass build (luthiers look away now!)

Thanks Jon. My advice would be to have a go, it's really not as hard as you think, and so far I've done all the work without any specialist luthiers tools. If you are into woodworking anyway then you'll already have 99% of what you need.

Flying V bass build (luthiers look away now!)

Well this has been on the back burner for a couple of months now due to a very busy spell at work including a workshop move, but finally managed a couple of hours on it this week. Finished routing the recess for the control panel so it will sit flush with the surface. (Also routed the pickup...

    Advice on external arched doors

Cripes! Not to put a downer on it, but making something like that to go in an important building does not strike me as a job for a hobbyist. I admire your ambition, but that is a few grands worth of work, and as someone else said very heavy and awkward to make/ handle.

Just bought a Viceroy TDS6 short bed

Great job on the lathe, that looks like a superb machine. You are one of those annoying gits who seems to know how to do everything and makes it look easy aren't you!
