    Thanks guys

A quick post to say thanks for the recent advice concerning which respirator to buy. I bought a Trend Airace and wore it for the first time this morning. It fits perfectly under a full length face shield, didn't disturb my specs and didn't mist up at all. I even forgot I was wearing it and...

My first attempt ..for a while

I tend to agree with you Paul, about the top looking a bit too heavy. In defence though, it does look slightly less 'heavy' in the flesh. The main reason why it is chunky is because my wife wanted a lidded pot and her hands are arthritic and it is easier for her to hold. I made a small trinket...

My first attempt ..for a while

:?: Er, why is it so big? Have I done something wrong? Thanks mr. It is now resized. Oh God I wish I was intelligent (homer) (hammer)

My first attempt ..for a while

Hopefully, I have uploaded a few pictures of my first attempt at turning for over a year. It's a bit crude by some of your standards, but it was done more as an excersise in chisel control and getting use to my new chuck, not to mention getting used to the higher speeds my lathe can now use...

    lathe speed

Mark, I know there are lathes with variable speed devices fitted, but I have no idea what makes them work, hence the question about rheostats.

    lathe speed

Hello David, I was pondering the very same question, and had a look at the phase inverters as a solution, but decided that the cost didn't justify it. Like you I am not at all electrically minded and thought about a rheostat, except I couldn't find any except for light dimmer switches...

    Face protection/Respirator advice

Thanks for the advice. I have ordered a Trend Airace mask and hope that I will be able to use my face shield over it and still keep my specs on. I did look at the powered face shields, but I can't really afford one just yet, besides which I had to use a Racal Airstream helmet for mu work years...

    Face protection/Respirator advice

I can't see one for £9.95 in Turners :?: . Preferably I want an 'all in one' full face mask.

    Face protection/Respirator advice

OK the Airace looks to be popular, but even with my old mask, my spectacles kept getting dislodged and the Airace looks to take up more room on the face. Does anyone use the airace with spectacles? I also want protection for my eyes and spectacles.

    Face protection/Respirator advice

Up until yesterday, I used a face shield and a rubber respirator, although it did keep dust out of my eyes and lungs, it did mist up regularly and wasn't spectacle wearer friendly. I say until yesterday because I attempted to change the filters and tore the rubber mouth piece  making it...

    Does anyone want a....

The surplus faceplate has been spoken for. I wasn't too sure how many lathes it would fit and therefore what the response would be. I have let it go on a first come first served basis and PM'd all who responded.

    Does anyone want a....

I have been tidying up and reorganising my workshop. I came across a load of stuff I had either forgotten I had or didn't know I had  One such item is a 4" diameter record power cast faceplate, however it is not a 3/4"x16 TPI(unf) thread. As far as I can measure it is 1"x10TPI (presumably...

    woodworm

In response to Dickums' concern about turning wood treated with woodworm killer, there are one or two points to consider. The first is cosmetic, the wood may discolour, usually darken a bit. This could be a good thing if you are after 'effects', or bad if you want continuity of colour in the...

    Silly question

I have loads and loads of those, Mike. What is that saying, something like, "it is better to feign ignorance than to open your mouth and prove it" My nephew asked me some good ones when he was a nipper. For example, "Land is measured in meters above sea level, is that when the tide is in or...
