    Turning is Heaven in 2011

I have to say that I agree with farmerboyce's sentiments entirely & say a big thankyou to Chaz. Just to add one point to Chaz's reply, established turners decide on what they want to make, then go to their woodpile & select a suitable piece, whereas a lot of new turners have no such stock thus...

    2 prongs or 4?

As said by others, the 2 prong is good for branches that haven't been cut at 90 degrees. The two prongs will bite if they are placed across the cut whereas a 4 prong will only bite on one prong until it's forced in far enough for the centre & 2 middle prongs to bite. It could do with a drawing...

    o'donnell grinding jig

The settings vary according to the size of your grinder. Presuming yours is a standard 6" grinder the centre height of the wheel must be 4" & the distance between the centre line & the base of the jig is 3". For a 7" grinder the measurements are 4.5" & 3.5" & for an 8" grinder 5.5" & 4" (seems...

    Preparing Wood For Turning

Keep the wood as long as possible for as long as possible (length & time). I've had some success with tying a plastic bag/carrier bag over each end & storing upright. Mainly branch wood, but all varieties. Smaller diameters are bundled together with a bag over the ends The bags have to be...

Brand new to turning! Any advice appreciated!

I would bring the lathe feet to the edge of the bench. Normal advice is to have the lathe centres at elbow height but I like mine a bit higher especially when using short handled tools, thus you may possibly need some blocks under the feet as well depending on the height of the bench. I'll bet...

Pen turning bushes & mandrel compatability.

My Axminster 1MT pen mandrel is probably five years old. I have just measured it with a Mitutoyo dial guage and got a reading of 6.25mm & the bushes which are a good sliding fit, an internal diameter of 6.35mm. HTH wasbit
