    Help for a lowly beginner

I am only a "being self taught" beginner but I have found using the following method works best for me:- When turning a slender spindle object (such as a lace bobbin) I turn an inch at a time starting at the tailstock end. I completely finish that peice before moving further back towards the...

    Aaaaargh...New scrollsaw arrived today...HELP?

Most blades give this result because of the way they are made. Practice takes care of it. Draw a longer pencil line on the wood then try cutting to that. Instead of looking at the blade keep your eyes on a point on the pencil line a few millimetres ahead and gently feed into the blade. You...

when using the skew....now with video!

Well I certainly did Leo :) Only been turning for a few short weeks and have put off getting a skew chisel. After seeing from your vids just how versatile the tool is I am going to get one and practise with it. Looking forward to a video with better camera angles too. Cheers Keith

    Jet Lathe - which one?

Have a look at the reviews attached to the 2nd (1014) lathe - the latest one is mine. It really is quiet - ask my wife :) The speed is easy to change - I now have the belt changing down to around 15 seconds. Variable speed would have been nice but as I am not planning any mass production I...

    Charnwood Scroll chuck any good?

.... and (it case they were ever removed) make sure that the carriers are also against the correct jaw number. I have a Barracuda Chuck and found this out the hard way. I took off the jaws (to change them) and twirled the chuck fully open - a carrier dropped out. Trying to refit it I...

My first Bobbin .... and is this correct?

Only 100 ... ! Made a template for that one and now going to use it to do its twin - that should keep me alert for a while. Then I will try some of the more ornate styles. That and a few more pens will keep me going till after my September Holiday. Probably try a small bowl or lidded box...

My first Bobbin .... and is this correct?

Well - if I can get it to upload then here is my first try after taking into account the advice of Tony. Just noticed that it is the same style as the OP - sorry about that ... I just happened to find a picture of the Classic style in a mag. Anyway it is 95mm long and the neck is 3mm in...

My first Bobbin .... and is this correct?

Just looking into this myself and found a guide here:- http://www.angelfire.com/d20/mikesbobbins/birth.html Basically 115mm to 130mm long and turn to a 6.25mm to 6.5mm diameter. Dont forget a 1mm diameter drilled hole in the tail end for spangles. The finish appears to be the same finish that...
