    Its probably obvious to most but use a good hardwood dowel. I used some cheap stuff for exaclty what the OP is asking and when we put the new screws in it had about as much hold as screwing in cotton wool..

    Vohringer ply. Its expensive but its strength to weigh tis superb. It looks great. Depnds on your budget. Lots of campers have Ikea units cut down to fit and they look good too. What camper are you building?
