Low angle vs Standard angle block planes.

Hello, I have used both low and standard angle block planes on various projects throughout my woodworking education. I like both for their typical applications; Low angle for end grain, standard for general planing of small components/chamfering etc. It's now time to invest in something...

Grinding blades with power tools/sanders discussion

The hand crank might be a good option for a few reasons come to think about it. It's definitely one of the simpler options, although the way my bench is set out I would like to be able to move whatever I chose into the corner rather than overhanging the bench, but I'm sure I could get creative...

Grinding blades with power tools/sanders discussion

Fair enough! Each to their own I guess. I'll give the belt sander another whirl seeing as i have one to hand, but I've had plenty of recommendations for a 6" grinder so that will be my next stop as they can be had for under £50 with a wide white wheel. Thanks for the suggestions, all useful!

Grinding blades with power tools/sanders discussion

I like the idea of a hollow grind to enable easier freehand honing, but I am interested to hear why a 6" hollow grind is horribly hollowed out? Have you run into problems using a hollow bevel? I didn't have much luck free handing the bevel on a belt sander before but I might try again using a...

Grinding blades with power tools/sanders discussion

I am actually leaning this way now.. a complete U-turn from my thoughts about a wet grinder/worksharp/sanding jig. I've done a lot of reading and had some personal recommendations for dry grinding with a decent wheel, it seems that common sense goes a long way in regards to not drawing a...

Grinding blades with power tools/sanders discussion

Hello all, I am having a tough time re-establishing my primary bevels using a honing guide on my scary sharp set up, even with the coarsest of wet/dry and 3M films, so I'm looking into some form of power tool grinding set up. I have a small home workshop, so space is a big factor which leads...

Spray guns for various wood finishes

I started with the Earlex HV5000 and think it's great. I've just upgraded to a Fuji, but unless you want to spend £600+ on something then the Earlex HVLP are hard to beat! The metal guns are so much better than anything cheaper I found at the time, it made decent work of lacquer/stains etc with...

Making dowels/plug for a hole repair?

Thanks, I've seen plug cutters in larger diameters as mentioned but I was wondering if there was a hand tool savvy trick to plugging smaller holes. Not to worry I'll weigh up the options are possibly use a dowel for the smaller diameter or open up the holes and make a small plug by hand :)

Making dowels/plug for a hole repair?

I have two holes which I've decided are too far off centre for my liking, I've decided to plug them and re-drill them correctly. The repair will be under a translucent finish but might be covered in the end, so this just seems like good practise to make it as seamless as possible :) The holes...

Totobobo Dust mask - My experiences!

They offer three types of filters, a 92%/94%/96% and in all honestly if you clean shaven it would be a doddle to a tight seal!

Totobobo Dust mask - My experiences!

It's great. I was sceptical about the efficiency of it, but the filter picks up so muchy light brown mdf dust that I'm confident it's doing it's job. With decent dust extraction I think it's the best I could find. It doesn't fog up your glasses and you can re-shape it to fit your nose exactly...

Totobobo Dust mask - My experiences!

Hello, I'm suffering with my allergies at the moment. and with my ever growing paranoia regarding wood dust, I came across these: http://uk.totobobo.com/ I have ZERO affiliation with Totobo, I'd just like to share my experience. They're designed for pollution, so I figured wood dust would be...

    dying grain filler?

Hello, I'd like to grain fill an ash guitar body before spraying tinted nitrocellulose lacquer, I've read good things about the rustins oil based filler and it seems to work well under cellulose sealer/lacquer. I'd like to dye it a very dark brown/black colour but I can't find much info on a...

Earlex HVLP System. Basic spray finishing advice

Hello, I've got the Earlex 5000 HVLP System and I own the 1,1.5 and 2mm tip sizes. I'm looking to finish an instrument soon using nitrocellulose lacquer, does anyone have some advice on thinning/spraying lacquer on a system like this? The info Earlex offer suggests to use the 1.0 mm tip for...
