    Waterstone

:D I will bear everyone in mind, I am sure they will help me in future but there is no substitute for an actual demo. :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYftYmKIF4s

    Waterstone

Thanks all. Luckily I found a video on YouTube which reviews the stone I have and mentions which side is which. :)

    Waterstone

I have just dug out my waterstone, it's a 1000/8000 graded stone. I haven't used it for a while and embrassingly I have forgotten which side is which as both look and feel as smooth as the other. How can I find out which is the 1000 graded side and which is the other?

    Lime tree timber

Many thanks for the info, helped greatly. I won't bother using it due to its duribilty and yes, Custard, if I find myself in the middle of the New Forest I most certainly WILL drop you a line! ;)

    Lime tree timber

Thanks for the replies. Just to add, it is common Lime not the fruit tree variety. :) I'm after two pieces, roughly 5cm by 10cm and about 15-20cm long. Trying to make a pot stand/planter and legs will be attached to those two Lime pieces via tenons, hopefully. Problem is the wood is very fresh...

    Lime tree timber

I've spent ages trying to find a wood merchants that sells off cuts of wood and gave up. After scrounging I found a big lump of trunk cut from what looks like a Lime tree. Is wood from this tree workable? I only need to put a couple of mortises in it. It is very fresh so at the moment a little soft.

    Outdoor protection

Thanks again, I think I will go down the 'mite route for piece of mind! :) Im guessing it will bond the joints as strong as it would be using wood glue(?)

    Outdoor protection

Ah, that was going to be my next question...What wood glue is best? I have a pot Evo-Stik wood glue but it doesnt mention it being water proof or not.

    Outdoor protection

Actually Im sanding the varnish off as we speak. :) Will the wood glue act as a form of water protection for the wood once its bonded? I'm thinking now that I WILL glue them as well and screw them together and then perhaps paint varnish into join between the two. I don't expect it to last for...

    Outdoor protection

Its just old pieces of pine that I found out about, not the greatest specimems. Trouble is I have already varnished the rest of the wood, its just the lapped pieces that I was wondering about. Many thanks for the info.

    Outdoor protection

I'm constructing something that will be kept outside and is put together with mainly lap joints which are screwed together. I was wondering should I varnish the wood that overlaps or can I use woodglue and would that provide enough protection against rain and the outdoor elements?
