Could you not use Medite Tricoya maybe made up of three laminations x2 12mm for face and back and 18mm core?
Then route a V groove for your panels and paint... Oh wait you want a timber look?
May I suggest that you don't use ply. If I were you I'd be buying marine ply to do the job which will be a small fortune. Spend a few quid more and get some Medite Tricoya.

Does anyone know of a supplier in the North east (I'm in durham) that does decent off the shelf mouldings.
I'm hoping for a recessed bolection moulding to fit 1/2" panelling or failing that some 'period' looking 12mm high moulding.

Good thinking! I'm always amazed at how simple things are when you have the knowledge. Maybe one day my common sense will prevail without the need for knowledge but I doubt it.
