    laying a Victorian floor

thanks for all your replies, and especially mickthe tree for such a detailed response. I'll try to follow that for the floor on top of concrete. It's reassuring to hear 'voices of experience.' Andriy

    laying a Victorian floor

Okay, so does a time come when the wood settles down and doesn't move any more? And is there a way of filling in any gaps afterwards? Or do we just have to live with gaps as I have seen in friends' houses?

    laying a Victorian floor

Hello I would appreciate any advice please: I am laying floorboards in a Victorian house and we would like to do it with a minimum of gaps (or none at all!) If I buy new pine I think it may shrink and gaps will open up I thought about buying reclaimed boards and laying them tight so there are...

finishing a pine floor - advice please

Hi - I want to stain and varnish a pine floor. The stain should be dark ie oak or teak with a matt finish. I wondered what would be the easiest way to do this ie stain and then varnish or does anyone know of an all-in-one product that would do the trick? thanks Andriy

    removing black marks

Thanks for the oxalic acid tip. As to the question of leftovers I have 6 lengths of 1.4m and some ms of handrail offcuts but not sure yet if I'll make something else with it - lovely wood to work with. Andriy

    sliding door question

Hafele don't make this mechanism that would enable wardrobe doors to close and then move forward to lie flush with the wall. Now that looks like something worth designing and patenting... Andriy

    sliding door question

Thanks. Hafele said they do make this sort of mechanism and asked me to fax them a sketch. So I have yet to find out how much they charge.

    sliding door question

Yes exactly like a van door, except the other way round, so that the door is inside the wall and then comes forward to lie flush with the wall when it closes. But thanks for the suggestions. I'll follow them up tomorrow.

question about building a bathroom cabinet

Thanks so much for the replies and making me feel welcome to the forum. Loved the photos. One further question - for a better finish for the varnish would you use a brush or spray kit (I don't know exactly what these are called)? Andriy

Hello I am new to this forum and I would like to start by asking a question: what would be the best material to use for a bathroom cabinet? Veneered MDF or veneered plywood? What special finish would I need to make it fully water resistant? Any suggestions would be much appreciated cheers...
