Anyone make their own taper drills?

I ha cheap set of drill/countersink bits. The countersinks work well but the tapered drills are very poor. I have used trend taper drills in the past and they are very good, much more like a conventional drill bit. I was wondering if anyone had ground their own taper drill bits and if there are places to work out what kind of taper I would need to make?

I don't know how much your cheap ones are, but how much work are you prepared to do to save £1.66?

I'd have thought they would be very difficult to make properly as in a normal drill the sides do not have any cutting action. In a taper drill the sides will need to be sharpened to cut the wood.

What's poor about the drills themselves? Could a quick sharpen maybe be enough to improve them?

Are you using old style screws, probably slotted? Modern screws are generally parallel on the threaded part with a shank that's narrower rather than wider, so the requirement for tapered drills is probably disappearing.

Usually for old style cut thread brass screws, which are tapered.
