There's a lovely series on BBC 4 at the moment called 'Handmade'.

It's like a documentary but with no words and no music, just highly skilled craftsmen and highly skilled film makers doing what they do best.

Dates and times: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b05ttnd7/broadcasts/upcoming

Clips:

I wish I'd found out about it before the first ones aired. I couldn't find any episodes on iplayer either, but hopefully they will be repeated at a later date.

Looking at http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b05ttnd7/episodes/guide
it doesn't look like any episodes have been broadcast yet.

The bold style of the film, making use of long, static shots with no music or commentary allows the viewer to admire in exquisite detail the painstaking craftsmanship.

I think most TV documetaries are ruined by music and could do without a presenter, but no commentary/narration or even captions? I hope at least the maker describes what they're doing as they're working, preferably without talking to the camera.

There was a programme on BBC4 where they took old steel making footage and removed the original sound track(s) which I presume would have been the narration, and added a continous stream of instrumental modern rock/pop music. It was completely unwatchable.

I rather enjoyed that one!

Reminds me of the Irish "Hands" series about various old crafts in Ireland like wheelwrights and carriage makers and cabinet markers that are up on youtube
