hi i have just started woodcarving i am confused as to which 3 sharping stones i need and which ones are the best been looking at water, cermic and oil

thank u for your help jas

Hmm

I could do with some advice on that as well. Currently using an oilstone the normal double sided one most place sell. So what is the best or does it depend on what you are doing?

Hi guys,
The best sharpening solution will vary depending on the size and shape of the gouge you are sharpening, and the carver you are speaking to. This site http://www.woodcarvingillustrated.com/forum/ make give you some clues to the available methods.
I am no great carver, but for what it's worth. My sharpening aids include:-
for gouges
standard off-hand bench grinder, two grits
diamond encrusted rubber compound wheel
buffing mop with compounds
flat diamond stones
leather surfaced almost strop
various slips, both oil and diamond
for knives
all of the above and a small ceramic stone

I use any, or all, of the above as required and without jigs.
