Thanks for the commentary, Johnny. Very useful. The first piece I did got five coats of Tung oil but has ended up quite matt. Rather disappointed. Tempted to take a tool and skim the surface off and do something different. I shall look into Chestnut oil. Also considering hard wax oil that I've seen mentioned in these forums. I shall have a potter through the "finishes" forum, too.

Buffing would help.
Boiled linseed oil, dansih oil and walnut(although some people are allergic to this) are also worth looking into. I find oil gives more of a sheen than a glossy shine, if you want high shine maybe oil isn't the way to go.
