Hi Everyone,

With xmas fast approaching my family have requested idea's. For a while now i have wanted a new bowl gouge and wanted to get started in pen turning. I know there are lots of options but I am not even sure where to start.

I have one of the axminster 7 or 8 tools box things but I fancy a bigger all round bowl gouge. Are there any that stand out as being better than others?

As for the pen turning the harder I look the more confused I get around what kits will work with what. All i am after is the mandrel and any required drill bits. I seem to remember seeing some sort of starter kit at axmintser, is that any good or is there another kit people generally recommend. I would be looking to use the better pen kits, i don't mind paying a bit more for the pen kits if they are known to be worth it.

Hope that makes sense

Thanks in advance

Paul

I really love my Crown Cryo 1/2" bowl gouge. I only use something else when that really isn't suitable.

I will be selling my mandrel and drill bit's shortly, planet/rotur brand. Comes boxed with 3 drill bits, spacers, adjustable mandrel. allen keys. All you need to add is a barrel trimmer.

Regarding chisels, these are excellent for pen turning, I have the full size versions. Being a beginner you don't have to worry about sharpening.
