    Wax polish

Hi, has anyone used that tube of Rub n Buff to apply a metallic finish to small projects, apparently it'll give a distressed look, I have ordered a Spanish Copper colour to test but I was wondering if the polish was permanent? Or is it just meant for ornamental use and won't stand up to...

    Chuck problem

It sure has Robbo :) Let me just say that I am very pleased with the quality of the chuck and jaws, apart from this oversight on the milling process on No 4 Jaw Carrier, I can't fault the set up, it's a smashing chuck for the price and very suitable for Midi lathes as my Axminster is. I also...

    Chuck problem

Robbo3, Many thanks for the stripdown :) I've done exactly as you said and found no damage internally, everything looks as new, there was very little debris at all....the roll pin you refer to, do you mean the raised grub screw sticking up in channel 4? I have found that it's because of this...

    Chuck problem

Hi guys, 18 months ago I bought the 70mm Viper 2 chuck and several sets of jaws for it. I have had no problems whatsoever so far as it's done everything I asked of it, till today........ I needed to drill a hole in the center of a 1" Delrin disc I had, 1/4" thick, no problem I thought so I...

    Laser engraving/cutting?

Has anyone bought a low priced engraver cutter machine? I turn lots of objects on my lathe, but my pyrography leaves a lot to be desired, I don't have the quality of handwriting and I don't want to use a hot brand. I have seen many products for sale that have laser engraved names or pictures on...

    Which Varnish for small projects?

Thank you for all the help and advice, I think I've found what I'm looking for....Acrylic Lacquer. It seems to fulfill most of the needs required and as it's water based, the fumes won't give me a high on the kitchen table  Nige

    Which Varnish for small projects?

I am about to delve into the making of traditional fishing floats and other small projects over the winter :) I have heard so many conflicting reports on the various lacquers, varnishes etc that my head's spinning reading them. I'm looking for.... An odourless high gloss, quick drying...

SVB, I have an Axminster Variable speed set on the slow belt, it doesn't start with a jerk so I'm hoping it will be ok :)

    Live centre tailstock chuck

    Live centre tailstock chuck

Does anyone know of a UK stockist that sells live centre tailstock chucks? I already have 2 decent tailstock chucks, a 13mm and a keyless 16mm, both M2....but I'm looking for a 13mm live center one. I do some small delicate jobs where the tail end needs to be supported, preferably by a chuck...

    Step drills or taper drills?

This is what I have in mind, as I say there's a machine that does it, but for repairing a few dowels it's far too expensive... :(

    Step drills or taper drills?

Hi, I want to splice 2 dowels together using a male on one piece, as in a pencil sharpener point and a female on the other, as in a cone shape. I know there is a tool for this but it's very expensive for what it does. I have a wood lathe so I would like to insert the dowel in the chuck, and in...

Another Amazon web site rip off

Ahhhh......is that the reason ebay sellers put an item up for a ridiculous price......I often wondered about that......many a time I've been looking, for example, a £12.50 item and have seen the same item up for £125.00........now I know, thanks :)

    Turning a coconut shell?

Thanks all :) Les, you mean an orbital sander? I have a triangular shaped one with velcro pads...hmm

    Turning a coconut shell?

Yes I agree it might be a shattering experience  I was considering, emptying the nut of water, then going through the sandpaper grades in the lathe, then finally attempting to cut it in half with a 1/16 parting tool to get a perfect rim.....I didn't intend to actually put a gouge on...

    Burn writing on your work

If you really want to get into woodburning, have a look at my friend Tracey's site, you'll be amazed at what she does with a Peter Child's machine, I was so impressed I went out and bought one myself, which I use to burn my initials on my work. That's all I can do, I'm as hopeless at pyrography...

    Turning a coconut shell?

I was just wondering if it's possible to turn a coconut shell? I've seen photos of small bowls that have been hand sandpapered and varnished and wondered if it was possible on a lathe, to get a nice smooth finish? Or should I just bin it.....our bird feeders already have hanging nuts on them...
