Setting up a "Men's Shed" - what power tools, machinery etc?

It's predominantly a shared or communal workshop. People can come and drink tea and chat, exchange ideas and experience and make anything they fancy really.

Setting up a "Men's Shed" - what power tools, machinery etc?

Hi, thanks for your input. I see what you are getting at, but I think if running Men's Sheds was a non starter there wouldn't be a few thousand of them around the world ;) I thing mid priced machinery will not burn out as fast as something built for the occasional weekend hobby/DIY job and I'm...

Setting up a "Men's Shed" - what power tools, machinery etc?

A lot of them do seem to mostly have retired members, that is true. Ours will be aimed at old and not-so-old members as in my opinion there are people of all ages who don't have a shed, garage etc but would love to do some woodworking, metalworking, craft, etc. The aim is to have a...

Ah well, not that then. Just individual training before someone is allowed to use it.

Setting up a "Men's Shed" - what power tools, machinery etc?

Missed one but out, I am going for the hackspace / makerspace activities and equipment also, 3D printer, laser cutter etc but I thought I'd ask about the woodworking machinery here.

Setting up a "Men's Shed" - what power tools, machinery etc?

As to the last point, we had a meeting with Men's Shed Cymru yesterday and this is all "game on!" but I see that it could look like I had a random idea to open one this morning lol ;) I had thought of going with a Saw Stop table for the very concerns that you have. I'm not sure how good they...

Setting up a "Men's Shed" - what power tools, machinery etc?

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Men%27s_shed We would look to get funding / grants from the lottery and anywhere else possible but there's a bit more info on the Wikipedia page. 25 have set up in Wales already and the lottery have looked upon them favourably most times I believe but I don't...

Setting up a "Men's Shed" - what power tools, machinery etc?

I was thinking of some axminster stuff as I know people rate certain products of theirs highly, I just have no experience with their stuff to know what is the good stuff. I'm sure some second hand machines are a good idea as I've seen advice in the past saying you can get a better quality...

Setting up a "Men's Shed" - what power tools, machinery etc?

Thanks for the shopping trip, this is exactly the kind of input I need at the moment :) I'll grab some popcorn ready for the debate about what people would change from this list lol just kidding :)

Setting up a "Men's Shed" - what power tools, machinery etc?

I understand what you're saying totally. I did think of taking all my gear to get it started pending funding but what happens when someone breaks it? It started in Australia and there are over 1,000 of them there so it must work! :)

Setting up a "Men's Shed" - what power tools, machinery etc?

Hi, myself a couple of other volunteers, are looking to set up a Men's Shed in our town. It's essentially a permanent communal workshop with all the toys which members can get together and make use of, if anyone hasn't heard of them yet. If you have then you're ahead of me ! I myself tend to...

    Titan compound mitre saw

https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=TTB59 ... 3&ie=UTF-8 says that it is a slider, screwfix site is down right now. They do have a Shleppach (spelling?) that has one review at 5/5 but I'd rather see more reviews than once person before I drew any recommendation. My Challenge Extreme Argos...

    Titan compound mitre saw

http://m.screwfix.com/details.htm?id=73135&csnbl=1 I've got my first ever compound mitre saw the 89.99 argos challenge which I bought second hand for 20 quid but I don't think it does trench / dado so I looked on screwfix and they have these with very positive reviews for a low priced saw...

Challenge Xtreme Sliding Compound Mitre Saw

I found the battery compartment, it is missing a piece to complete the circuit but I bridged a pair of batteries and still nothing but I will persevere with this when I get chance to rig up 3v to apply to the terminals and it works or it doesn't

    Cutting Acrylic

for thin stuff I've always believe this will work. I've got some 1.5, 2 and 3mm and it's what i'd try, otherwise slow speed with blade or bit sounds sensible !

    Titan TTB54SSW 457mm Scroll Saw

I haven't had chance to properly test the scroll saw however I have noticed that the yellow insert in the centre of the surface (table / bed ? in work sorry, can't think today lol) is sunken not flush, so the workpiece catches on the edge. Looking at the photo I attached of the saw it does look...

Challenge Xtreme Sliding Compound Mitre Saw

it's the 1700w one, hadn't seen that 1500w one. As to how they differ I don't know. I cleared sawdust and still don't see the light lol however there's always the chance that it's pants anyway. Edit: Just saw you said the red older one, it's not red it is the same as the photo other than not...

A South Wales club sounds good, I'm in Carmarthenshire though so also a bit of a trek to nip across to Cardiff :(
