Workshop Layout - help / inspiration needed

I'm a big fan of this aluminium profile. Costly here in the UK so something to keep eyes open for used. This bench which has a full width drawer loads up with about 1/4 ton between the toolboxes on the bottom shelf and the heavy surfaces used on top. Heavier gauge profile will frame the...

    Wild Service boards

Apparently not. The woods look very similar but Wild Service is a "sorbus" while Swiss Pear belongs to the pear family. It was new to me too but my wife is familiar with it. An excellent write up to be found here ...

Workshop Layout - help / inspiration needed

I have too much stuff in a single garage. The problem with having several interests. The only way I can get this to work is like a galley kitchen with walkway / standing aisle down the middle and benches / storage / machines along the two long walls. I've chosen a heavy tablesaw to be my...

What kind of woodworker are you?

Small town parocialism ! Tell that to the population of Asia. I've eaten dozens of salads where tomatoes sat alongside pineapple and dragon fruit ....

    Help and Advice

It's very variable though. If it's some old / tired / no name tool you might be lucky to get 20% of new price. If it's premium Festool / Fein / Mafell in little used condition you might get 70%. Being willing to box something up and post it gives you a nationwide audience. Selling collect only...

Can anyone recommend a decent make of stepped drill bit?

There is a very big difference between the accuracy and cleanliness of the holes cut by these two types of holesaw. Don't confuse them, and do use a drill press for the job if you possibly can.

    Help and Advice

If you list machinery of any high value on FBM, ignore the 20 scammers who will message you on the first 2 days and wait for the real buyers who aren't sitting glued to their screens and will get in touch later. It's disappointing just how many thieves there are out there. Ebay is better for...

Can anyone recommend a decent make of stepped drill bit?

I don't rate and don't generally buy Starrett these days, but in this instance I think they are doing the job for me and sourcing these holesaws from a reliable Chinese factory. I have several and consider them good value for money. In particular I drilled a row of four holes through 3mm...

    Bench top pillar drill question.

You'll probably find the same thing under the nu-tools, naerok, rexon, and many more names just as @ChaiLatte says. To the length of the bolt: they are pretty much useless as a means of measuring but they are handy for setting a limit and drilling multiple holes at the same depth. That being...

Can anyone recommend a decent make of stepped drill bit?

For what it's worth, I would use a different cutter altogether. I have a couple of large step drills like yours, bought overseas so the brand is irrelevant. I keep them for punching holes in plastic electrical boxes only, that means they will always stay sharp. For drilling steel or aluminium...

    Machinery wheels? Casters

Two fixed and two castors will be more stable in use, but you'll need enough space to steer it. Four castors is more maneouverable but less stable and not actually nicer to steer.

    Router table / router question

Router tables / insert plates either come undrilled and you have to drill and tap your own holes, or they come predrilled for one or sometimes several different models of router. Normally the popular models. It is clear your router and table don't match. Either because the router isn't one of...

    Wildflower seeds / garden

Yellow rattle is good advice. Look out for / at local meadows. They will give you a clue for what will work with the local soil and climate. Buying plants in general from local nurseries is a good thing because they are acclimatised to local conditions and more likely to a) survive moving into...
