    Dust extraction

I've recently acquired a Metabo BAS505 bandsaw and it has transformed my workshop! It's transformed it in my cutting capabilities and also dust! It's not good and I want to get a dust extractor for use with the bandsaw and also whilst sanding on my lathe. Record Power have plenty of choice...

    Identify this timber

The timber is quite heavy although I've not tested the moisture content. I've had a look at some other maple pictures and I see what you mean, although given it was sourced locally in Southern Scotland I'm quite surprised. Thanks for the pointers Mark

    Identify this timber

I've made a random purchase of a few offcuts of timber this weekend all of which I was told was beech. I'd say most of it is, but having cut open this but, I'm not so sure. The timber sections are about 6" wide. Any ideas? Thanks Mark

    rip saw

I'm doing some initial cutting of some sycamore logs by hand before I can get them down to size so I can work on them on my table saw. Progress is slow with the "Irwin Jack Universal" saw I'm using: As I've got a few to process, I was wondering if I'm going to be better off using a 26" 4.5...

    Mid range tenon saw

Thank you all for the feedback. I'm getting a much better idea of what I need and have picked up some good info from sharpening videos online. I think that given what I'm wanting to achieve (small tenons for chairs) it's looking like I should be getting a finer 13tpi or less rip saw which will...

    Mid range tenon saw

I'm going to embark on some chair making for my next project which is going to involve some mortice and tenon making skill improving. I've previously had mixed results by using my router table for cutting tenons, but I really want to make them properly by hand. Now my cheap and blunt DIY tenon...

    sharpening methods

Thanks all for taking the time to answer my contentious question. Some new ideas I'd not come across before like the scary sharp description by Eric the Viking. I'm not sure which direction I'll follow yet, but I've a clearer idea with your ideas.

    sharpening methods

My tool sharpening equipment consists of a very old and worn oil stone. I basically want to be able to get a really good edge on my chissels, plane irons etc. There appear to be a couple of options for me. 1. A waterstone arrangement from Norton like their Norton Waterstone Starter Kit 2. A...

    Timber Suppliers in East Lothian

I was wondering if anyone knows of a good timber merchant in the East Lothian or Edinburgh areas? There are lots of merchants supplying building materials, but I wanted someone who could sell me some sawn boards of hardwood for furniture making.
