I've made a random purchase of a few offcuts of timber this weekend all of which I was told was beech. I'd say most of it is, but having cut open this but, I'm not so sure.

The timber sections are about 6" wide. Any ideas?

Thanks

Bottom two pics look a little like oak to me, going by some of the surface checking.
Either way it's got some attractive grain in it.

The timber is quite heavy although I've not tested the moisture content.

I've had a look at some other maple pictures and I see what you mean, although given it was sourced locally in Southern Scotland I'm quite surprised.

Thanks for the pointers

Mark
