An unusual arrangement with the vice installed on an extension forward of the main bench, it looks rather limiting. Is there a particular purpose for that design?
 
It's a shoulder vice, considered especially useful for dovetailing. It has the advantage over a metal face vice of being able to grip the work directly in line with the screw and hence doesn't rack under pressure. They're not awfully fashionable because of the relative complexity of building. Rob Cosman and Frank Klaus are among the high profile proponents of the form.

Also good for gripping longer pieces of wood vertically, so I am told.
 
Good benches we had a workshop full of them arranged around a central well. The dogs are great for glueing up panels and frames. Only issue was kids over tightening vice and springing the circlip off vices. Quite space saving too
