[newbie question]
Hi, after a seemingly interminable bit of sanding, I'm just coming to the point where I can start on the varnish on my project. Just one thing - I also want to paint a few letters on it: do I simply paint on the bare wood, then apply varnish, or should I lightly sand the paint as well, then varnish - or some other method?
Cheers,
Percy

You won't need to sand the paint if it's water based, just varnish over. Ronseal water based varnish is far superior to old fashioned polyurethane stuff, and the matt version doesn't show brush marks.
