Hmmm no.

Whilst I appreciate the sentiment , market place guidelines state...

11 – Ownership.
All items offered for sale must be the property of the seller or family member. Items offered for sale belonging to a friend, acquaintance or the postman's 3rd cousin once removed are not acceptable as are posts concerning sales, auctions or offers elsewhere. Such posts will be deleted without notification. This board was created solely for the use of our members as a means to dispose of surplus Workshop items and as a facility for members to find Workshop Equipment. If a member is in any doubt about posting please refer to a member of the moderating team.

Maybe it's time to look again at that then ?

If someone here is prepared to help facilitate the third party's sale of goods via the forum, that should fit with the "members to find Workshop Equipment" surely ?

Agree

The moderators already have the option to allow certain posts that do not fit in with guidelines at their discretion but common courtesy would suggest contacting the mods beforehand to discuss it and not just posting a thread that directly contradicts the rules.

being pedantic, the OP doesn't contradict any rules anyway.

There are several ways a member could assist the lady to sell her tools through this site that would not contravene the rules as they stand.

Pendants unite!
We know what the rules are. Whether or not we agree with them is irrelevant.
Most of you have been contributors for long enough to know what is allowed and what isn't, regardless of exact wording.
Do we really have to have a fifty page document written in legalese so that any wording cannot possibly be twisted, misconstrued or otherwise thrown back at us by people who have nothing better to do than waste other people's time.
Please have some common courtesy and stop trying to win points in some imaginary keyboard warrior games of oneupmanship.

No, it's VERY relevant. If there's silly rules that are being enforced unnecessarily they need to be challenged.

Indeed, Peter is hardly some newbie of dubious reputation. He wouldn't make a post like this unless he thought it was appropriate.

and that should apply to the moderators too.

Let's just remember what this is about;
A widow has contacted one of the best known woodworkers in the UK to help find good new owners for her deceased husband's woodworking tools. He's just asked for further help here as he's geographically unable to help.
There may be many members here who would like the opportunity to assist or purchase the tools. Why should they be denied that opportunity because of petty silly rules ?

This is why we simply delete those posts that flout the petty silly rules, because pendants insist on banging on about a point that that they don't agree with when it has already been explained.
The petty silly rules as you call them were put in place by the person that set up the forum. Without sounding flippant, If you do not like the rules then you have two choices, approach the subject with the powers that be, (not a moderator) and discuss, or go somewhere else.

my personal opinion regarding Peters post, is this - he knows what the rules are, and need not suggest others flout them. If he wants to help the lady in question he simply needed to post along the lines of ' widow disposing of tools please contact me for further details'. Everyone's happy, including the moderators who need to uphold the petty silly rules and then don't need to enter into time wasting discussion with pendants.

Rules can and should be changed and improved to suit the membership. That's best done by open discussion.

Didn't see Peter asking for help to sell them here. Members could help the widow with value, she might want to sell them to a dealer so some idea of value would help, they might help her to sell via ebay or adds in the local paper or on Gumtree. Mod seems to have jumped to a conclusion the Peter was looking to circumvent the rules.

Peter has since edited his post, rewording it, making all subsequent posts irrelevant. Thread now locked.
