Hello all,

I have a reasonable load of spindle wood which was originally destined for the fire wood pile. However cutting up revealed that the heart wood is a distinct reddish brown against the creamy white sap wood. The growth rings are also well marked.
Has any one turned spindle wood?
Does it finish well?
Is it safe for contact with food?

Thanks,

Richard.

Traditionally used for making skewers and similar items, and in Germany for making Pipe Stems.

Would be good for Crochet Hooks I would have thought.

Sounds like hawthorn which also has the same markings. If it's used for skewers and pipes it should be OK for food stuffs I wopuld have thought
