This last year has seen my turning activities move towards segmented work, having seen photos of remarkable pieces made by the big name turners. I become obsessional as these things take over my thoughts. I read all I can on the subject, Talk to people in my turning club, check out online groups etc. My last three segmented pieces have turned out (excuse the pun) well, but with the knowledge gained from them has suggested other ways of doing things if I were to make that piece again. I guess this is the way we learn, by our mistakes and considerations of how it could have been better accomplished. This brings me to my enquiry. Thus far I have cut my wedges using a mitre saw. At the Yandles Spring Show this year I bought a record power 12 inch disk sander, made the jigs etc and use this to fine tune the segments. This made a big step forward. I recently bought Steves Workshop Essentials DVDs for bandsaws and following instructions set mine up such that it is performing now better than it ever has in the ten years I've had it. I used this for cutting the sometimes very small pieces used to make up parts for a feature ring. Ive only done one vessel with a feature ring and non turners think it's fantastic, but I can see where it could be improved. Accurate and safe cutting of wedges, sometimes quite small ones, is clearly a major step in the production of a segmented piece. Many people use a table saw for this. Just about all in America! What do other forum users use? Mitre saw or Table saw? What do you consider the advantages or disadvantages of each?
I don't own a table saw but am seriously considering obtaining one. I would be interested in other members views.
