I don't have a large space to work right now but I am looking to get into woodturning, but my budget isn't huge. I'd like to keep my spending below £200 per tool so that I can afford to by the chisels required as well.

I don't mind buying second hand as long as the items seem decent but I have no idea what I am looking at when it comes to lathes at least. Gumtree is showing some things within my price range but I'm not sure if I should just buy new since I've no idea how to judge whether those machines will serve me well.

As for the details in regards to what I want to turn and the cutting depth of the bandsaw; I'd like to turn small bowls, cups / goblets, maybe some pens, rings (mainly small things). The bandsaw cutting depth wouldn't exceed anything past 80mm but the primary purchase would be for ripping wood, for which I would need no more than 50cm.

I'm really unsure if I should risk buying second hand tools considering my limited knowledge in the tools, but my limited budget leaves me to consider it.

Sorry if this is a repeat thread but most of the other threads I've searched are throwing up lathes much beyond my price range.

Thanks you, the advice is appreciated.

Hi

That's essentially the same lathe as I had when I started, it will produce anything you want it to. If it's in good condition I'd certainly give it some serious consideration.

Regards Mick

I shall PM the user an offer then. Bristol isn't too far. I just hope the thing can fit in my car.

Don't forget you will need something to sharpen your turning tools - at least a grinder if not some jigs to help you get the right profiles on your gouges.

First I need to buy some tools haha. I'll get on that. Would hand sharpening not be good enough? Advice on the band saw would still be appreciated as I'm not sure about the band saw I'd need for ripping.

Hi

The cheapest way to sharpen lathe tools is to use sanding discs attached to a faceplate, (via an MDF disc).

Most turners don't do a lot of ripping on the bandsaw, (I think I'm in the minority being primarily a spindle turner).

Look for something with a minimum of a 12" throat and 6" depth of cut. Second hand is going to be a must here, you won't get a suitable saw new for your proposed budget. Startrite or Record Power would be my preference.

Regards Mick

The lathe has come under budget so I think I might be able to go a little over. I'll have a bit of a shop as it's not urgent for me to get the bandsaw just now, I was mainly after advice. The lathe I kind of want ASAP to play around with. I have a few ideas I want to play with.

Any tips on second-hand tools to use with the lathe? Brands / places to buy them? I only know ebay and gumtree

If you're in Bristol, there's a great tool shop called bristol design on park row, they always have lots of second hand turning tools, some of which don't have handles, which is half the fun if you can make your own!

I'm in Leeds, so a bit far off. I should be in Bristol on Sunday but I imagine they'd be closed on Sundays. I don't know of any second hand tool stores in Leeds so I'll have to check the markets / just look online.

Another vote for Record-Power. They travel well. I've used one for years here in Australia and I bought it second-hand. It's now waiting for my son to pick up to get him going. My regards to the Headrow. :)
